CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN HE PLANNED TO BLAME

Claire sat motionless as Agent Naomi Price opened the file.
The first document was a contract between Ryan’s company and a transportation supplier called Peterson Global Freight. Claire recognized the name from Marcus’s warning, but she had never seen the paperwork.
Her forged signature appeared on the final page beneath the title:
Independent Compliance Consultant.
“I’m not a compliance consultant,” Claire said.
“We know what you do,” Agent Price replied. “You oversee operations for Breckenridge Construction. That position gave you access to vendor networks, international shipping contacts, and secure bidding information.”
“I never gave Ryan anything.”
“Someone using your credentials did.”
Naomi slid a second document across the table.
It showed payments from Peterson Global Freight to Westbridge Consulting—the same shell company that had received money from Claire and Ryan’s investment account.
More than two million dollars had moved through Westbridge in eight months.
Claire read the figures twice.
“Ryan stole from our joint account to fund this?”
“Possibly. Or to make it appear that you funded it.”
The words struck harder than the affair.
Cheating was betrayal.
This was attempted destruction.
Claire looked at Naomi. “How long have you been investigating him?”
“Four months.”
“Did Marcus contact you?”
Naomi did not answer directly.
“Mr. Hale raised concerns internally. Shortly afterward, your husband began building a case that Marcus was responsible for irregular payments. We believe Ryan intended to have him dismissed before the next quarterly review.”
Claire remembered the late-night calls, the tense company dinners, and Ryan complaining that Marcus was “unstable” and “jealous.”
Every conversation had been preparation.
Ryan had not merely lied to her.
He had recruited her without her knowledge, planting stories she might later repeat.
“How is Chloe involved?”
Naomi pulled out a photograph taken outside a hotel in Montreal.
Ryan and Chloe were kissing beside a black SUV.
The date was printed at the bottom.
Nine months earlier.
Claire’s mind moved backward.
Nine months earlier, Ryan had flown to Montreal for what he called a three-day client negotiation. Claire had spent that weekend assembling furniture in their guest room because they had been discussing starting a family.
She had sent him photographs of the finished nursery bookshelf.
He had replied with a heart.
While standing beside Chloe.
“Chloe created Westbridge,” Naomi said. “Her name does not appear publicly, but we traced the registration to an attorney who previously represented her father.”
“Her father?”
“Arthur Bennett. Former deputy director of procurement at the Port of Boston.”
Claire knew the name.
Arthur Bennett had resigned after a bribery investigation, although he was never charged.
Naomi continued.
“We believe Ryan and Chloe used inside information to redirect freight contracts. Companies paid kickbacks through Westbridge. When concerns surfaced, documents began appearing with your authorization.”
Claire pushed the file away.
“I want a lawyer.”
“That would be wise.”
“Am I under arrest?”
“No. But you are exposed.”
“Then tell me what you need.”
Naomi studied her.
“Your cooperation. Quietly.”
The conference room door opened.
Marcus entered, breathing hard, his tie loosened and his face pale.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “Ryan called an emergency board meeting.”
Claire stood. “He knows?”
“He knows something happened on the flight. He told the board you suffered an emotional breakdown after accusing him of an affair.”
Naomi’s expression remained calm, but Claire felt heat rise into her chest.
Marcus continued.
“He also claimed you accessed confidential company records and threatened Chloe.”
Claire laughed once, without humor.
“He moved quickly.”
“He had this prepared,” Marcus said. “This wasn’t spontaneous.”
Of course it was not.
Ryan had always anticipated risk. He planned vacations with spreadsheets and maintained backup chargers in every suitcase. A man like that did not build a two-million-dollar fraud scheme without planning an exit.
Claire was his exit.
Her phone rang.
Ryan.
The three people in the room stared at the screen.
Naomi nodded. “Answer it. Put him on speaker.”
Claire accepted the call.
“Where are you?” Ryan demanded.
“At the airport.”
“I looked for you.”
“No, you didn’t.”
A pause.
Then his voice softened.
“Claire, I know what you think you saw.”
“I saw my husband stroking another woman’s hair while she slept in his lap.”
“It was a mistake.”
“For how many months?”
Another pause.
Longer.
“Come to the hotel,” he said. “We can talk privately.”
“Which hotel?”
Ryan hesitated.
That was the first error.
“The Grand Denver.”
Claire looked at Naomi.
The agent wrote something on a notepad.
“Is Chloe there?” Claire asked.
“No.”
From somewhere near Ryan, a door closed.
Claire heard Chloe’s voice faintly.
“Who are you talking to?”
Ryan covered the phone too late.
Claire closed her eyes.
Even now, he underestimated her.
“Come home,” he said. “We’ll fix this.”
“Which home, Ryan? Ours? Or the one you’ve been financing through Westbridge?”
Silence.
Marcus’s eyebrows rose.
Naomi shook her head sharply, warning Claire not to reveal more.
But it was done.
Ryan’s voice changed.
The false warmth disappeared.
“What did Marcus tell you?”
“Enough.”
“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”
“No. But I’m beginning to.”
“You need to stop.”
“Or what?”
His next words were quiet.
“You’ll lose everything.”
Claire felt the threat settle inside her.
The apartment.
Her savings.
Her career.
Her freedom.
Ryan believed those things were leverage because he believed her entire identity depended on the life they had built together.
He had forgotten who she had been before him.
“I already lost everything on the plane,” she said. “Now I’m deciding what to rebuild.”
She ended the call.
Naomi exhaled slowly.
“That was risky.”
“He was going to know Marcus talked eventually.”
“Yes, but now he’ll accelerate.”
“Good.”
Marcus stared at her. “Good?”
Claire picked up the document bearing her forged signature.
“A careful Ryan has been framing me for months. Maybe a frightened Ryan will make a mistake.”
Naomi looked at her with reluctant approval.
“You understand that provoking him could be dangerous.”
“I understand that waiting politely has already made me a suspect.”
Claire’s phone buzzed.
A message from Dana.
I found the travel records. Ryan and Chloe took fourteen trips together. Some were billed to clients that don’t appear to exist. There’s more. Call me somewhere safe.
Claire showed the message to Naomi.
“Can your assistant be trusted?”
“Yes.”
“Then tell her not to send the records through company email. Have her download them to an encrypted drive and leave the office.”
Claire called Dana.
Her assistant answered in a whisper.
“I’m in the file room.”
“Dana, listen carefully. Save everything offline. Do not tell anyone what you found.”
“I already tried to access one of the vendor invoices again,” Dana said. “It disappeared.”
“Someone deleted it?”
“Someone is deleting all of them. Right now.”
Marcus pulled out his phone.
Naomi moved toward the door.
“Get out of the building,” Claire said.
“I’m trying, but there’s something else.”
“What?”
Dana’s voice shook.
“The invoices were approved under your employee ID.”
Claire gripped the edge of the table.
“That’s impossible.”
“I know. You were in Phoenix on the approval dates. I checked your calendar.”
Naomi took the phone.
“Dana, this is Agent Price. Do not use the elevator. Take the west stairwell and leave through the loading entrance. Do you understand?”
“Yes.”
“Is anyone near you?”
Footsteps sounded through the call.
Dana stopped breathing.
A man’s voice spoke in the distance.
“Dana?”
Claire recognized the voice immediately.
It was James Porter, Ryan’s longtime friend and the head of corporate security at Breckenridge Construction.
James was not supposed to be in Denver.
He was supposed to be in Boston.
“Dana,” James called again. “Mr. Morgan said you might need help finding something.”
The line went dead.
Claire tried calling back.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Naomi was already speaking into her radio.
Marcus paced toward the window.
“This is bigger than Ryan’s company,” he said. “Why would James be involved?”
Claire remembered hundreds of dinners with James.
He had been best man at their wedding.
He had helped Ryan move into Claire’s apartment before they were married.
He had a key to their home.
A cold realization moved through her.
“Because Ryan didn’t access my credentials remotely,” Claire said. “James did it from inside my company.”
Naomi stopped speaking.
Claire looked down at the forged signature again.
It was not just similar to hers.
It was perfect.
The shape of every letter.
The slight upward stroke at the end.
The pressure pattern.
Someone had practiced.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
He read the message, and his face went white.
“What is it?” Claire asked.
Marcus turned the screen toward her.
A company-wide announcement had just been sent from Ryan’s CEO.
Effective immediately, Marcus Hale had been suspended pending an internal fraud investigation.
Attached to the announcement was a photograph of Marcus meeting Claire at the airport hotel.
Someone had taken it less than fifteen minutes earlier.
Beneath the photograph was a second image.
Claire entering Conference Room Aspen with Agent Naomi Price.
Ryan did not merely know where they were.
Someone inside the hotel was watching them.
Naomi moved toward the window and pulled the curtain shut.
“Everyone away from the glass.”
Claire’s phone buzzed again.
This time, the message came from Ryan.
You should have come to the Grand Denver.
May you like
A second message appeared.
Now your assistant is going to pay for your mistake.
