CHAPTER 4 — THE CHILD BEHIND THE LIE

For several seconds, Claire could not speak.

The photograph showed Chloe entering Claire’s home with a baby wrapped in a pale blue blanket. Ryan held the apartment door open while looking over his shoulder toward the camera.

The date was a Saturday in May.

Claire had been in Atlanta overseeing the emergency shutdown of a damaged construction site.

Ryan had told her he spent the weekend alone.

Claire enlarged the baby’s face.

A round cheek.

Dark lashes.

A tiny hand gripping Chloe’s coat.

“Do we know who the child is?” Naomi asked.

Dana searched the archived folders.

“There’s a medical bill.”

The invoice came from a private pediatric clinic outside Boston. The patient’s name was listed as Noah Bennett.

Date of birth: eleven months earlier.

Responsible party: Chloe Bennett.

Emergency contact: Ryan Morgan.

Relationship to patient: father.

Claire sat down.

Eleven months.

She counted backward.

Chloe had become pregnant while Claire and Ryan were undergoing fertility testing.

Claire remembered Ryan sitting beside her in a specialist’s office, squeezing her hand as the doctor discussed hormone levels and possible treatments.

He had kissed her forehead in the parking garage.

“We’ll figure this out together,” he had promised.

At the time, Chloe was already carrying his child.

The cruelty of it was almost too large to process.

Marcus looked away from the screen.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire heard the words, but they seemed to come from far away.

She had wanted a baby with Ryan.

Not because he pressured her.

Because she had believed he would be a loving father.

She had pictured him teaching their child to ride a bicycle, reading bedtime stories, and making pancakes on Sunday mornings.

Now she saw those images for what they were.

Advertising.

Ryan had sold her a future while secretly building another one.

Dana found a second document.

A lease for a townhouse in Cambridge.

Ryan paid the rent through Westbridge Consulting.

Another document showed monthly transfers to Chloe labeled administrative housing expenses.

Naomi examined them.

“This helps establish misuse of corporate funds.”

Claire looked at her sharply.

For the agent, the baby was evidence.

For Claire, he was the grave marker of her marriage.

She stood.

“Does Ryan know we found this?”

“No,” Dana said.

“Good.”

Naomi moved closer. “Tonight’s meeting is no longer advisable. Emotional discoveries compromise judgment.”

Claire met her gaze.

“My judgment has never been clearer.”

“You just learned your husband has a child.”

“I learned he has one more weakness.”

Marcus looked uncomfortable. “The baby is innocent.”

“I know.”

Claire’s voice softened.

“Noah may be the only innocent person in this entire scheme.”

She would not use a child as a weapon.

But Chloe might.

A woman willing to help frame another person for federal crimes could still panic when her child’s future was threatened.

Claire studied the townhouse lease.

“Chloe thinks Ryan is leaving me for her.”

“Probably,” Dana said.

“But Ryan transferred money to an account only he controls. The five-million-dollar payment is in his name, not hers.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“He may be using her too.”

That was the fracture Claire needed.

At six that evening, Claire entered the Grand Denver wearing the same blazer she had worn on the plane. A recording device rested beneath the inner seam. Naomi’s team occupied rooms on three floors.

Marcus was placed elsewhere for his safety.

Dana remained at the federal office.

Ryan had reserved a private suite on the nineteenth floor.

When Claire knocked, Chloe opened the door.

Her face was pale but composed.

She had changed into a black dress and tied her hair back. Without the cream coat and first-class confidence, she looked younger.

More frightened.

Ryan stood near the windows holding a glass of whiskey.

James Porter was beside him.

Claire stopped in the doorway.

Ryan smiled.

“You remember James.”

Claire looked at the man who had attended her wedding, shared Christmas dinners in her home, and once driven three hours to help when her car broke down.

“Did you threaten my assistant?”

James crossed his arms. “Dana misunderstood.”

“She hit you with a laptop bag.”

His jaw tightened.

Claire stepped inside.

“Maybe she understood perfectly.”

Ryan closed the door.

The lock clicked.

Naomi’s voice sounded faintly through the receiver hidden in Claire’s ear.

We see all four. Continue.

Claire placed her purse on the table.

“Where are the divorce papers?”

Ryan nodded toward a folder.

“Where is the proxy?”

“Not here.”

Chloe looked at him. “You said she was bringing it.”

Ryan ignored her.

Claire noticed the tension immediately.

“Two million dollars,” Claire said. “The apartment. Full release from any corporate liability.”

Ryan smiled. “You still don’t understand your situation.”

“I understand enough.”

He approached her.

“You signed the consulting agreements. You approved the transfers. You introduced Peterson representatives to Breckenridge suppliers.”

“My signature was forged.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes.”

A flicker of anger crossed his face.

James shifted near the door.

Claire continued.

“You made one mistake, Ryan.”

“Only one?”

“You believed knowing my passwords meant knowing me.”

His smile disappeared.

Chloe spoke impatiently.

“Can we stop doing this? She signs, we leave, and everyone gets what they want.”

Claire turned toward her.

“Do you?”

Chloe stiffened.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Five million dollars goes to Ryan after the merger. How much do you get?”

Ryan’s head snapped toward Claire.

Chloe looked at him.

“What five million?”

There it was.

The first crack.

Ryan recovered quickly.

“She’s bluffing.”

Claire reached into her purse.

James moved forward.

She slowly removed a printed copy of the payment schedule and placed it on the table.

Chloe grabbed it.

Her eyes moved rapidly down the page.

“Ryan?”

“It’s a projected consulting fee.”

“You told me the payment was divided.”

“It will be.”

“The document lists only you.”

Ryan took the paper from her.

“This is exactly what Claire wants. She’s trying to turn us against each other.”

Claire almost admired the speed of his manipulation.

“Ask him where the Cayman account is,” she said.

Chloe’s face changed.

Ryan stared at Claire.

She had guessed.

There was no evidence of a Cayman account in the files. But men like Ryan rarely trusted partners enough to keep money where everyone could see it.

Chloe turned to him.

“You said everything was in Zurich.”

Ryan’s silence confirmed more than an answer would have.

Claire felt Naomi’s voice in her ear.

Excellent. Keep them talking.

James stepped between Claire and the others.

“This meeting is over.”

“No,” Ryan said. “It isn’t.”

He approached Claire again.

“You’re going to sign the proxy.”

“After the settlement.”

“You don’t have negotiating power.”

“I have copies of everything.”

Ryan smiled.

“We searched your office. Your computer. The cloud account.”

“You searched the places you knew about.”

For the first time that night, uncertainty crossed his face.

Claire glanced toward Chloe.

“Did he tell you what happens after I’m charged?”

Chloe said nothing.

“My voting proxy transfers to him. He receives five million dollars. Marcus takes the blame for the company fraud. James disappears with his payments. What happens to you?”

“Stop,” Ryan said.

Claire continued.

“You created Westbridge. You signed the lease. You processed the payments. Your father introduced Peterson.”

Chloe’s breathing quickened.

“Ryan said I was protected.”

“By what? His word?”

Ryan grabbed Claire’s arm.

James immediately stepped forward, but not to help her.

Naomi’s voice sharpened in Claire’s ear.

We are moving in.

Claire looked at Ryan’s hand around her wrist.

“Let go.”

“You should have stayed quiet.”

The suite door burst open.

Federal agents entered with weapons drawn.

“Hands where we can see them!”

James reached inside his jacket.

An agent forced him against the wall before he could remove anything. Chloe screamed. Ryan released Claire and stepped backward.

Naomi entered last.

“No one move.”

Ryan looked at Claire.

The hatred in his face was naked now.

“You recorded me?”

Claire rubbed her wrist.

“You still think this is about one conversation.”

Agents searched the suite.

James carried a concealed handgun and a second phone containing messages between him and Ryan.

Chloe began crying.

“I want a lawyer.”

Ryan remained silent.

Naomi looked at Claire.

“Are you injured?”

“No.”

An agent approached Naomi holding a small black device.

“We found this behind the television.”

Naomi examined it.

“A signal jammer.”

Ryan had planned to disable Claire’s recording equipment.

Another agent came from the bedroom.

“There’s no proxy here.”

Ryan smiled faintly.

Claire saw it.

The federal team had entered before he confessed to the central conspiracy. They had evidence of coercion and illegal possession, but perhaps not enough to hold him long.

Naomi knew it too.

Ryan and Chloe were detained for questioning. James was arrested on the weapons charge and suspicion of obstruction.

Before Ryan was taken from the room, he leaned close to Claire.

“You think this saved you?”

An agent pulled him back.

Ryan kept his eyes on her.

“You have no idea what you just started.”

Two hours later, Claire returned under escort to the federal office.

Dana was waiting.

So was Marcus.

Naomi entered the room carrying a grim expression.

“Ryan’s attorney is already challenging the detention. Chloe is refusing to cooperate. James claims he brought the weapon for legitimate security work.”

Claire sat down.

“What happens now?”

“We continue building the case.”

Dana’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, and slowly looked toward Claire.

“What is it?” Claire asked.

Dana ended the call.

“That was the night supervisor at Breckenridge.”

Her face had gone white.

“The main office is on fire.”

Claire stood abruptly.

Dana continued.

“The fire started in the records department.”

May you like

The same department containing the original files that could prove Claire’s innocence.

And according to building access records, the last person to enter the floor had used Claire Morgan’s security badge.
