Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Coup

The morning sun over Manhattan shone with an unforgiving, crystal clarity. At 9:00 AM, the United States District Courthouse on Pearl Street was besieged by media helicopters, news vans, and hundreds of reporters.
Inside Courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was pressurized, silent, and lethal.
Sloane Whitaker sat at the defense table, flanked by three high-priced defense attorneys. She wore a sharp charcoal-gray suit, her hair styled flawlessly, her face a mask of smooth, icy composure. She still believed her team could dismantle the prosecution’s case as mere circumstantial corporate drama.
Then the double oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
Claire Hale entered, walking with slow, unyielding grace. She wore a tailored midnight-blue coat, her silver cane tapping against the marble floor like a ticking clock. Beside her walked Grant Hale. His face bore severe bruises and stitches across his cheek, but his posture was straight, his eyes fixed forward with cold, unwavering purpose.
Sloane’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second. Her gaze locked onto Grant, expecting to see fear or hesitation in his eyes.
Instead, Grant looked right through her, as if she were made of thin air.
"All rise," the bailiff called out as Judge Eleanor Vance took the bench.
The lead federal prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney David Stern, stood up immediately. "Your Honor, in light of new physical, digital, and audio evidence recovered by Westchester Law Enforcement late last night, the government moves to enter state's exhibit 404-B."
Sloane’s lead attorney jumped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! This last-minute evidence is surprise maneuvering meant to prejudice the grand jury—"
"Overruled, Counsel," Judge Vance said dryly. "Proceed, Mr. Stern."
Stern walked over to the defense table, carrying a sealed silver hard drive.
"This drive contains two critical items," Stern announced to the courtroom. "First, a direct audio wiretap of the defendant ordering an armed strike against Claire Hale at her Westchester residence, verified by the hitman currently in federal custody. Second... the master ledger of Blueglass Holdings Inc."
Sloane’s fingers dug so hard into the defense table that her knuckles turned stark white.
"The defendant claimed that Grant Hale initiated the eighty-five million dollar treasonous code transfer at midnight on the night of the crash," Stern continued, casting a live server log onto the courtroom screens. "However, forensic analysis reveals that the biometric token used from Mr. Hale’s phone was bypass-routed using an internal backdoor protocol—a protocol created by Sloane Whitaker six months ago."
Stern turned around and pointed directly at Sloane.
"Sloane Whitaker did not just steal corporate funds. She attempted to murder a pregnant mother, framed her employer for high treason, and conspired with international entities to liquidate Hale Meridian into a shell company."
A collective gasp echoed across the spectator benches. Flashbulbs went off outside the glass windows.
Sloane looked desperately toward her lead attorney, but the man had already closed his folder, slowly sliding his chair two inches away from her. The defense had no counter. The trap was ironclad.
Judge Vance struck her gavel, the sharp sound reverberating through the room.
"Bail is revoked immediately," Judge Vance declared coldly. "The defendant will be remanded to federal custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending formal sentencing. Court is adjourned."
Two federal marshals stepped up behind Sloane, snapping iron cuffs around her wrists.
As they pulled her toward the side exit, Sloane broke her silence, screaming across the gallery.
"Grant! Look at me!" Sloane shrieked, her voice echoing with wild, unhinged desperation. "I did it for us! I was going to give you the world! You were trapped under her thumb!"
Grant stood beside Claire. He didn't blink. He didn't shout.

"You didn't do anything for me, Sloane," Grant said, his voice quiet, hollow, and utterly devoid of emotion. "You killed my daughter. And you destroyed yourself."
Sloane was dragged into the dark holding corridor, her desperate screams fading into the heavy steel doors as they slammed shut.
