Chapter 10 - Facing the Monster

The quiet air in the unfinished nursery felt heavy enough to suffocate.

The assassin, a broad-shouldered man named Victor, stepped fully into the room. Rainwater dripped from the hem of his dark slicker onto the hardwood floor, near the tiny yellow rain boots resting on the changing table. The long black suppressor on his firearm remained leveled squarely at Claire’s chest.

Claire did not scream. She did not flinch or beg.

Slowly, deliberately, she shifted her weight onto her good leg, leaning lightly on her obsidian-topped cane.

"Victor," Claire said smoothly, her voice terrifyingly steady. "Sloane promised you three million dollars in an offshore account in Saint Kitts, didn't she?"

The hitman’s eyes narrowed slightly above his collar. "You talk too much, Mrs. Hale."

"I don't talk," Claire corrected, her gaze holding his without a flicker of fear. "I calculate. Sloane’s offshore accounts were frozen by the Federal Reserve at 4:15 PM today. The money she promised you doesn't exist. If you pull that trigger, you aren't getting paid—you're executing a hit for a ghost who is about to serve forty years in federal prison."

Victor’s grip on the suppressed pistol tightened, but a microscopic grain of hesitation planted itself in his eyes. "Sloane has reserve keys—"

"I wrote the security code for the reserve keys, Victor," Claire interrupted, her tone sharp and precise as a scalpels. "I am the sole administrator of Hale Meridian’s global liquid trust. If you kill me, the automated system triggers a permanent burn protocol on every linked offshore wallet within sixty seconds. You will be hunted by the FBI for a murder that netted you zero dollars."

"You're trying to buy time," Victor growled, stepping forward.

"I'm offering you a transaction," Claire said softly, her left hand slowly sliding behind her trench coat lining. "Ten million dollars. Untraceable cryptocurrency, delivered to your wallet in five minutes. In exchange, you give me Sloane's primary communication channel."

Victor paused, his finger resting heavily on the trigger. Ten million untraceable dollars was a life-changing fortune compared to Sloane's ghost promises.

"How do I know you have ten million in crypto ready?" Victor demanded softly.

"Because I am Claire Hale," she whispered. "I don't walk into any room without a backup ledger."

Claire pulled her left hand from her coat—not with a weapon, but with a sleek, military-grade biometric transponder button.

CLICK.

Before Victor could react, the high-intensity floodlights installed inside the nursery ceiling detonated with a blinding, three-thousand-lumen flash.

Victor cursed, throwing his arm over his face as temporary blindness struck. He squeezed the trigger instinctively.

THUMP.

The suppressed round shattered the glass window behind Claire, showering the room in crystal shards.

Claire didn't hesitate. Fueled by adrenaline that drowned out the pain in her broken ankle, she swung her heavy silver cane with all the strength in her upper body. The obsidian handle struck Victor violently across the side of his knee.

Metal crushed cartilage. Victor let out a muffled roar of pain, collapsing onto one knee.

Claire didn't try to fight him hand-to-hand. She turned, pushed past the nursery door, and slammed the reinforced oak door shut, throwing the heavy brass deadbolt into place.

Down the hallway, the sound of glass breaking echoed from the grand staircase.

"Claire!" a frantic voice screamed from the floor below.

Claire stopped dead in her tracks, her hand clutching her bruised ribs.

It wasn't her private security team. It was Grant.
