Chapter 2 - The Decrypted Ledger of Atlanta

The Boeing 777 began its gradual descent through the low-hanging cloud bank over Long Island Sound at 5:45 PM.

Inside the quiet forward cabin, I had unbuckled my seatbelt, kneeling on the carpeted floorboards directly beside Seat 3B.

Lily had set down her purple pencil. She sat with her knees pulled up to her chest, her patent-leather shoes resting against the edge of the leather cushion, watching me with that unyielding, solemn scrutiny. Her small hand was holding mine—her tiny fingers curled tightly around my thumb, fascinated by the heavy platinum signet ring engraved with the Moretti family crest.

"Does your ring have an anchor on it?" Lily asked softly.

"It does," I answered, my deep baritone gentling into an unfamiliar, reverent warmth. "It means that no matter how hard the wind blows, the ship never drifts."

Lily considered that for three seconds, nodding solemnly. "Mommy has an anchor necklace. She keeps it inside an old tin box beneath her bed. She said a tall man gave it to her when it was snowing, but he had to fly away to fight the dragons."

A jagged ache tore through my chest.

The twenty-carat sapphire-and-platinum anchor pendant—the piece my mother had given me before her death, the piece I had draped around Naomi’s neck that final snowy midnight in Atlanta. Naomi hadn't pawned it. She hadn't sold it to pay for milk or heat. She had kept it hidden beneath her bed like a sacred relic while she starved.

Across the aisle, Julie’s phone vibrated continuously against her travel bag.

I reached out, taking the device from her trembling hands. The screen displayed five missed calls and an unsealed electronic legal summons originating from the Chancery Court of New York County:

EMERGENCY REPOSSESSION & RECEIVERSHIP NOTICE:

Petitioner: Crestview Commercial Real Estate LLC (Managing Trustee: Vincent Moretti).

Target Property: The Ellis Graphic Design Studio & Archive (Flushing, Queens).

Asserted Claim: Immediate statutory eviction and physical seizure of all intellectual property, design servers, and personal property to satisfy $420,000.00 USD in unhedged commercial mezzanine debt.

Execution Time: Scheduled for 7:00 PM this evening.

My obsidian-gray eyes narrowed to two points of lethal, diamond-tipped permafrost.

Vincent Moretti. My late father's younger brother. The sixty-two-year-old corporate underboss who had managed our commercial real estate portfolio for two decades.

Vincent hadn't just driven Naomi out of Atlanta four years ago; he had tracked her to New York. The moment she had attempted to rebuild her life in Queens six months ago, opening a modest commercial studio, Vincent had secretly bought the building’s mezzanine debt through an unlisted Delaware shell company, tripling the interest rates to deliberately force her into medical and financial collapse.

He wanted her dead before she could ever cross the East River.

Because under the Moretti Sovereign Lineal Trust Indenture of 1968, if I died without a legitimate, recognized lineal heir, one hundred percent of the four-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar maritime, logistics, and real estate conglomerate defaulted unconditionally to Vincent and his sons.

"He knew she was in New York," I said softly, handing the phone back to Julie.

Julie’s breath hitched. "Dante... three days ago, two men came to our studio while Naomi was coughing up blood. They told her that if she didn't sign over the design copyrights and surrender Lily to a state guardianship facility, they would ensure she was arrested for felony commercial fraud. That was when her heart gave out. She collapsed on the floorboards, clutching Lily's drawings."

Beside me, Lily reached into her backpack, pulling out her stuffed rabbit with the missing ear.

She pressed the worn plush against my wrist. "Mabel makes the scary people go away. You can borrow her so you don't get mad."

I looked down at the battered toy, then looked up at my daughter’s flawless, innocent face.

"Keep Mabel, sweetheart," I whispered, my large hand cupping her cheek, feeling the steady, warm pulse of my own bloodline beneath her soft skin. "Daddy has thirty armed men and the Supreme Court of the United States to make the scary people go away."

The landing gear deployed with a heavy, pressurized hydraulic shudder:

THUD.

The runway lights of LaGuardia Airport flashed across the cabin windows like streaks of golden fire.

"Hold my hand tight, Lily," I said, unbuckling her seatbelt as the tires kissed the asphalt. "We're going to pick up your mother."
