Chapter 3 - The Threat at the LaGuardia Tarmac

At 6:15 PM, the winter twilight descended over the private airfield of LaGuardia Airport in Queens, cloaking the hangars in cold, steel-blue shadows.

The commercial airliner pulled up to the gate, but the passengers were instructed to remain seated. Through the oval cabin windows, an extraordinary sight stopped every traveler in first class dead in their tracks.

Idling on the tarmac beside the mobile air-stairs were four pristine, armored black Cadillac Escalades bearing diplomatic and federal law enforcement plates, flanked by two marked cruisers from the Port Authority Police Department.

Standing at the base of the stairs were eight operators from Moretti Sovereign Defense, dressed in tailored charcoal suits with tactical headsets and discreet gold lapel pins, forming an impenetrable security corridor.

I stepped through the aircraft door carrying four-year-old Lily securely in my left arm.

Her small pink cardigan fluttered in the freezing slipstream, her arms wrapped tightly around my neck, her face buried into my cashmere lapel, while my right hand held Julie’s trembling arm.

Waiting at the foot of the stairs, leaning both weathered hands over the carved silver eagle head of his mahogany walking cane, was eighty-year-old Arthur Vance Senior.

Former Chief Justice of the United States Court of Appeals, legendary corporate forensic litigator, and the senior governing trustee of the Moretti Lineal Sovereign Trust.

Arthur stood six-foot-two in an immaculate bespoke three-piece charcoal tweed suit, his silver hair neatly combed back beneath his fedora, his silver pocket watch chain gleaming against his vest. Beside Arthur walked Senior Special Agent Marcus Cole of the FBI Major Financial Crimes Task Force and Dr. Lauren Bennett.

CLACK. CLACK. CLACK.

Arthur’s walking cane struck the asphalt with concussive, rhythmic majesty as we reached the bottom riser.

The eighty-year-old legal titan looked down at Lily’s face, then looked up at me with slate-gray eyes rich with ancient, victorious reverence.

"She has your mother's curls, Dante," Arthur rumbled, his deep gravelly baritone vibrating through the cold air like rolling thunder. "And the unbroken jaw of the Moretti line."

"How is Naomi, Lauren?" I asked, turning immediately to Dr. Bennett.

"Her condition was critical when we arrived at Queens Presbyterian forty minutes ago, Dante," Dr. Bennett reported with clinical precision. "Severe bronchial pneumonia complicated by chronic malnutrition and physical exhaustion. But we executed an emergency medical transfer under federal jurisdiction. She is currently stabilized inside the private intensive care suite of our private surgical hospital on the Upper East Side. Her vitals are steady, the intravenous antibiotics are circulating, and she is resting comfortably."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, pressing my lips gently against Lily’s dark curls.

"And Vincent?" I asked Arthur.

Arthur Vance Senior pulled an unsealed crimson-stamped legal dossier from his leather brief:

"Vincent Moretti is currently chairing an emergency board meeting on the sixty-fifth floor of our Madison Avenue tower," Arthur revealed, every syllable carrying the concussive weight of an artillery shell. "He has informed the board that you were lost in a private aviation incident over Pennsylvania. He has convened thirty institutional investment bankers to ratify the immediate fire-sale of our deepwater container fleet to Harrison Croft's offshore syndicate."

Arthur's gray eyes flashed with lethal, sovereign fire.

"The board votes at seven o'clock, Dante."

I shifted Lily into my arms, looking toward the Manhattan skyline glittering across the East River like an ocean of diamonds.

"Put Julie and Lily in the second armored vehicle with Dr. Bennett," I commanded Rocco. "Take them straight to Naomi’s recovery suite."

I turned to Arthur Vance Senior and Agent Marcus Cole, my slate-gray eyes turning colder than an Arctic blizzard.

"Let us go to Madison Avenue," I whispered. "It is time to conduct Vincent's final performance review."
