Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room Confession

The neon lights of the county federal holding facility buzzed with a dull, rhythmic hum that felt entirely out of sync with the storm brewing inside the building. It was 2:00 AM. Outside, a torrential downpour lashed against the reinforced security glass, but inside Interview Room B, the air was dry, sterile, and suffocatingly cold.

I sat across the heavy stainless-steel table from Ethan.

He looked smaller than he had in the courtroom. Stripped of his tailored designer suits, his luxury watches, and the intimidating aura he wore like a shield, he sat hunched in his orange jumpsuit, his wrists chained to the bolt in the center of the table. His eyes were bloodshot, fixated on the manila folder resting squarely in front of me.

"You shouldn't be here, Sarah," Ethan rasped, his voice cracked and hollow. The charming corporate titan was completely gone, replaced by a desperate man staring at the absolute ruin of his life. "Get your lawyer. Drop the charges. We can settle this privately. We can get a quiet divorce, split the holdings, and you can walk away with anything you want."

"Anything I want?" I repeated softly, opening the manila folder to reveal the original trust documents we had recovered from his basement vault just hours earlier. "Ethan, you don't own anything left to split. The federal asset forfeiture team seized the corporate accounts at noon. Apex Development is currently under receivership, the municipal contracts are canceled, and every single shell company you set up has been unmasked by the DOJ."

Ethan slammed his chained fists against the steel table, the metal rattling violently in the small room. "You destroyed everything I built! I gave you a home! I gave you status! I made you a partner in an empire!"

"You made me a prisoner in my own life," I answered, my voice cutting through his fury like a scalpel. I leaned forward, resting my arms on the table and looking him dead in the eye. "And you made one fatal miscalculation. You thought because I stayed quiet, I was weak. You forgot that before I ever wore your ring, I spent five years tracking international financial criminals who were infinitely smarter, richer, and more dangerous than you'll ever be."

Ethan sneered, his lips curling back in a desperate flash of malice. "You think the courts are going to care about a messy marriage dispute? The city councilmen, the zoning commissioners, the mayor—they're all tied into these contracts, Sarah. If I go down, I'm taking half the municipal government of Viet Tri down with me. They won't let you destroy this city just to satisfy your personal revenge."

I slid a single sheet of paper across the table toward him—a document bearing the signature of the federal prosecutor and the senior district judge.

"The mayor resigned at midnight, Ethan," I said calmly. "Three zoning commissioners were arrested an hour ago. The municipal government isn't protecting you anymore; they're tripping over themselves to cut deals and testify against the mastermind who set up the bribery ring."

Ethan stared down at the paper, his face turning the color of ash. The last pillar of his illusion crumbled completely. He leaned back in his chair, his shoulders sagging as the crushing weight of reality finally settled over him.

"What do you want, Sarah?" he whispered, his voice trembling.

"I don't want anything from you, Ethan," I said, standing up and buttoning my coat. "I already have everything I came for."

I tapped the manila folder containing my father’s restored estate trust.

"And by sunrise, the prosecutors are going to add every single charge of inheritance theft and domestic assault to your federal indictment. You built an empire of lies, Ethan. Now you get to spend the rest of your life reading the wreckage."

I turned toward the heavy steel door, signaling the guard outside to unlock the latch. As the heavy door swung open, I didn't look back once.
