Chapter 8 - The Press Conference

The flashbulbs outside the federal courthouse nearly turned the midnight darkness into blinding midday. By 8:00 AM, the media frenzy had reached epic proportions. Every major national financial network, regional newspaper, and investigative journalism outlet had converged on the steps of the municipal justice center.

I walked out through the heavy mahogany doors flanked by Agent Marcus Vance and my brother Liam. I wore no sunglasses, no concealing makeup, and no heavy trench coat. The faint bruising along my jawline was visible to the cameras—a silent, unyielding testament to survival, resilience, and the refusal to be silenced.

Microphones crowded the podium like a forest of steel stems. The murmurs of hundreds of reporters hushed instantly as I stepped up to the microphone and adjusted the height.

"Good morning," I began, my voice steady, resonant, and carrying across the plaza without a single trace of hesitation. "For the past four years, Apex Development has been presented to the public as a model of civic progress, visionary leadership, and corporate philanthropy. That image was a carefully constructed fiction."

In the front row of the press gallery, a reporter from the National Financial Review shouted, "Ms. Vance! Is it true that municipal contracts were systematically rigged?"

"Every single major municipal development contract awarded to Apex Development over the past four years was secured through systemic bribery, illegal kickbacks, and federal wire fraud," I answered directly, holding my gaze steady toward the primary broadcast cameras. "Furthermore, federal investigators, operating on forensic evidence secured through independent corporate audit, have confirmed the total asset forfeiture of the parent corporation and all associated subsidiaries."

Another reporter pushed forward. "What about Mr. Ethan Apex? Is he facing federal trial?"

"Mr. Apex was arraigned yesterday on multiple federal counts, including wire fraud, public corruption, grand larceny, and interstate extortion," I stated clearly. "He is currently being held without bail in federal custody, awaiting a federal trial that will dismantle the entire criminal enterprise he constructed."

I paused, letting the silence settle over the crowded plaza before delivering the final, definitive statement.

"Too often, abuse thrives behind closed doors because perpetrators believe their victims are isolated, powerless, and voiceless. To anyone watching who believes their voice doesn't matter, or that an abuser's empire is too big to fall: look at the records. Look at the data. Truth cannot be buried forever under intimidation and fear. The audits will always catch up."

I stepped back from the podium as a deafening wave of camera shutters and shouted questions erupted around us. Liam placed a hand gently on my back, guiding me safely through the throng of journalists and toward the waiting federal SUV.

The corporate fortress was gone. The abuser was behind bars. And for the first time in four years, the future was entirely mine to write.
