Chapter 12 - The Grand Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was an ocean of shimmering crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne flutes, and the soft murmur of elite society mingling beneath gilded ceilings.
When the double doors swung open and I stepped into the room, the entire orchestra seemed to pause for a fraction of a second.
All eyes turned toward the entrance.
I wore a floor-length, midnight-blue velvet gown that swept gracefully across the marble floor, accented by a diamond-encrusted pendant that had belonged to my grandmother and the unmistakable platinum-and-sapphire brooch pinned to my shoulder. My hair was swept up in a sleek, elegant chignon, and my posture was straight, absolute, and unyielding.
I didn't look down. I didn't search the crowd for familiar, friendly faces of people who might judge me. I walked forward with the effortless grace of a woman who owned every inch of the room—because, in many ways, I did.
Instantly, the murmurs shifted. The whispers of pity or shock that had followed my public separation dissolved into a chorus of deep, respectful awe.
CEOs, venture capitalists, and foreign investors rushed forward to catch my eye, offering respectful nods, eager smiles, and invitations to collaborate. People who wouldn't have dared speak to me directly without Julian standing beside me now treated me with the deference reserved for royalty.
Arthur Vance was nowhere to be seen—having quietly retired to a secluded estate upstate following his resignation—and Julian’s name was already becoming a distant, faded cautionary tale whispered in corporate boardrooms as a warning to ambitious pretenders.
Thomas Vance walked up to me, raising a crystal flute of champagne with a warm, approving grin.
“To the undisputed queen of Whitmore Dynamics,” Thomas toasted quietly, clinking his glass against mine.

“To new beginnings, Thomas,” I replied, taking a slow sip of the crisp, golden liquid as I looked out over the sparkling ballroom.
I had survived the fire. I had reclaimed my father’s legacy. And as I stood there in the center of the glittering room, surrounded by light and power, I knew that no one would ever mistake my silence for weakness again.
