Chapter 13 - The Truth About Claire

Claire demanded to hear the recording herself.

Ava didn’t want her near any investigation room.

Claire insisted.

“If Bell says I was involved, I deserve to know why.”

Rebecca stood beside her.

“No more secrets.”

Ava agreed.

They brought Bell into a federal interview room.

No cameras except evidence recording.

No audience.

Bell sat calmly.

Marcus placed Claire’s photograph on the table.

“You said Victor Crane chose her.”

Bell smiled.

“I said she was the heir.”

“She denies knowing about the network.”

“I’m sure she does.”

Claire watched through the glass.

Ava entered the room.

Bell looked at her.

“Detective.”

“You enjoy misleading people.”

“Occupational skill.”

“Did Claire knowingly work for Crane?”

Bell leaned back.

“She worked for Mariner.”

“Knowing it was Crane?”

“No.”

Ava felt Claire exhale behind the glass.

“Then why call her the heir?”

“Because Crane became sentimental in old age.”

“That doesn’t sound like him.”

“You didn’t know him.”

“I know enough.”

Bell smiled.

“No, Ava. You know the criminal.”

“What else is there?”

“The father.”

Ava stared.

Bell continued.

“Victor watched Claire from a distance her entire life.”

Rebecca’s face twisted in disgust behind the glass.

“He paid for schools she thought were scholarships.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Medical bills.”

Rebecca whispered, “No.”

“College.”

Claire began crying.

Bell continued.

“Her first apartment.”

Ava said, “Without contacting her.”

“Control does not require affection.”

“Why prepare her for Mariner?”

“Because she was brilliant.”

Claire looked away.

Bell said, “Crane wanted someone capable of running legitimate operations.”

“So he planned to make the criminal network legitimate?”

“Eventually.”

Ava almost laughed.

“With drug money?”

“With enough clean money, history forgets where it began.”

“What did Claire know?”

“Nothing at first.”

“At first?”

Bell smiled.

There it was.

The hook.

Ava leaned closer.

“What changed?”

“Three months ago she discovered a hidden manifest.”

Behind the glass, Claire went still.

Rebecca looked at her daughter.

“Claire?”

Claire said nothing.

Ava saw it.

Bell was telling the truth about something.

Ava entered the observation room.

“Claire.”

Claire’s face had gone pale.

“I can explain.”

Rebecca stepped away from her.

“You knew?”

“Not about Crane.”

“What did you know?”

Claire covered her face.

“At Mariner, I discovered containers being rerouted.”

Ava asked, “Illegal cargo?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Did you report it?”

“I reported it internally.”

“To who?”

Claire whispered, “Thomas Bell.”

Ava turned toward the interview room.

Bell waved through the glass.

Rebecca looked devastated.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because he said it was a government security operation.”

Ava said, “And you believed him?”

“He showed credentials.”

“What kind?”

“Homeland security.”

Marcus cursed.

Forged.

Claire continued.

“He asked me to keep monitoring shipments.”

“So you were feeding Bell information.”

“I thought I was helping an investigation.”

Ava understood exactly how Crane had recruited cops.

Make corruption look like duty.

Make complicity look like service.

“You signed documents?”

“Yes.”

“Authorized transfers?”

“Some.”

“Money?”

“No. Routing permissions.”

Ava closed her eyes.

Claire had unknowingly helped the network.

Enough that Bell could make her look guilty.

Rebecca said, “That is why he called you heir.”

Claire began crying.

“I didn’t know.”

Ava believed her.

Again, belief wasn’t enough.

But the evidence might be.

Marcus entered.

“We have the original email chain.”

“From Claire?”

“Yes.”

Her first report to Bell explicitly described suspicious activity and requested law enforcement review.

Ava exhaled.

“That proves intent.”

“It helps significantly.”

Claire looked at her.

“I could still go to prison?”

Marcus answered carefully.

“You may have to testify. You may face investigation. But the documents show you believed you were assisting authorities.”

Rebecca held her daughter.

For the first time since the story began, Ava saw something hopeful.

Truth could wound people without destroying them.

Then Naomi entered quickly.

“We have a problem.”

Ava turned.

“Port explosion?”

“Diversion.”

“For what?”

“Victor Crane.”

Ava froze.

“He’s in federal custody.”

“Was.”

“What happened?”

“Transport vehicle attacked thirty minutes ago.”

Marcus stared.

“Crane escaped?”

Naomi shook her head.

“Worse.”

Ava’s stomach dropped.

“He was taken.”

“By who?”

“We don’t know.”

A captured Crane was useful.

An escaped Crane was dangerous.

A kidnapped Crane meant someone needed something from him.

Ava immediately thought of accounts.

Codes.

Names.

Network contacts.

Bell laughed from the interview room.

Everyone turned.

Ava went inside.

“You knew.”

Bell smiled.

“I suspected.”

“Who took him?”

“Ask Claire.”

Ava slammed both palms onto the table.

“Stop.”

Bell’s smile faded slightly.

“Who?”

He leaned forward.

“There was one person Victor trusted more than me.”

“Name.”

“One person who had access to Daniel Mercer’s original operation.”

Ava frowned.

“Patrick?”

Bell laughed.

“No.”

“Malcolm?”

“No.”

“Ethan?”

“No.”

Bell looked almost delighted.

“Your mother.”

Ava stopped breathing.

“Ellen Mercer.”

Behind the glass, Patrick stood abruptly.

He had arrived for questioning minutes earlier.

Ava looked at him.

Patrick was shaking his head.

“No.”

Bell continued.

“Daniel told Ellen more than anyone realized.”

Ava whispered, “My mother wasn’t involved.”

“Not then.”

“What does that mean?”

Bell smiled.

“Ask her where she was three months after Daniel died.”

Ava knew the answer.

Her mother had always said she spent months with relatives in Arizona.

Bell said, “She went to Canada.”

Ava stared.

“To meet Victor Crane.”

Patrick entered despite Marcus trying to stop him.

“You’re lying.”

Bell looked at him.

“Am I?”

Patrick’s face changed.

He remembered something.

Ava saw it.

“What?”

Patrick whispered, “Ellen disappeared for five days.”

“You said Mom went to family.”

“That’s what she told me.”

Bell leaned back.

“Your mother found Crane before any of you.”

Ava’s phone rang.

Ellen.

Her mother.

Ava answered immediately.

“Mom?”

Ellen sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Ava.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“Are you with Victor Crane?”

Silence.

Ava closed her eyes.

“Mom.”

“Yes.”

Everyone in the room froze.

“Why?”

“Because there is something your father asked me to do if Crane was ever arrested.”

“What?”

“Finish it.”

Ava’s voice shook.

“Finish what?”

“Daniel’s operation.”

Ava felt cold.

“Mom, tell me where you are.”

“I can’t.”

“Did you kidnap Crane?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Ellen paused.

“People who think Crane still controls the network.”

“Who?”

“I’m going to find out.”

Ava almost screamed.

“You are not a cop!”

“No.”

Ellen’s voice became firm.

“But I was married to one.”

“Mom—”

“And I watched every system your father trusted fail him.”

Ava went silent.

Ellen continued.

“I promised Daniel that if his evidence ever surfaced, I would protect you.”

“You protected me by lying for nineteen years.”

“Yes.”

“That nearly got everyone killed.”

“I know.”

“Where are you?”

“Ava.”

Her mother’s voice softened.

“I love you.”

Fear hit Ava.

“Mom.”

The line went dead.

Naomi immediately began tracing.

Marcus rushed toward the technical unit.

Patrick stood pale.

Ava stared at her phone.

Then a video message arrived.

Ellen appeared on-screen.

Behind her, Victor Crane sat tied to a chair.

Alive.

A gun rested on a table nearby.

Ellen looked into the camera.

“Victor is going to tell me who ordered your father’s death.”

Ava whispered, “We already know.”

Then Crane spoke from behind her.

“No.”

Ellen turned.

Crane smiled.

“Sloan pulled the trigger.”

Ava’s heartbeat slowed.

Crane continued.

“But somebody else ordered Daniel Mercer to be stopped that night.”

Ava stared.

Patrick stared.

Malcolm Vale’s hospital room appeared on another monitor.

Ethan’s face went pale when agents told him.

Ellen moved closer to Crane.

“Who?”

Crane laughed.

“You spent nineteen years protecting her.”

Ellen’s expression hardened.

“Who?”

Victor Crane looked directly into the camera.

“The person who ordered Daniel Mercer taken off Route 41…”

He smiled.

“…was Ellen Mercer.”

The video ended.

And Ava’s world broke one final time.
