Chapter 14 - The Birth of Victoria

The delivery room at Mount Sinai Hospital was a hive of controlled intensity. Monitors hummed, medical staff moved with practiced urgency, and the storm outside beat a relentless rhythm against the reinforced glass windows.

Through every agonizing contraction, Owen stood beside Evelyn like an immovable iron oak. He held her uninjured hand, letting her squeeze his calloused fingers until his knuckles turned white.

"Breathe, Ev," Owen urged softly, wiping the sweat from her brow with a cool towel. "You've survived the fire. This is just the dawn."

"Push, Ms. Caldwell! One more time!" the lead obstetrician commanded, her voice steady and encouraging. "She's right there!"

Evelyn gathered every remaining ounce of strength in her aching body. She thought of the cold, dismissive eyes of Grant Mercer as he stepped backward from the forge. She thought of Sloane Hart’s cruel whisper. She thought of her uncle’s calculated madness.

She channeled all that pain, all that betrayal, and transformed it into raw, primal life.

With a fierce, breathless gasp, Evelyn pushed.

A sharp, clear, indignant cry echoed through the delivery suite.

The sound shattered the heavy tension in the room. Tears instantly spilled down Evelyn's cheeks as the medical team quickly cleaned the newborn and wrapped her in a soft pink blanket.

"She’s here," the doctor smiled warmly, placing the tiny bundle directly onto Evelyn’s chest. "A healthy, vibrant seven-pound baby girl."

Evelyn looked down at her daughter. The baby had a tuft of dark hair and dark blue eyes that blinked up at her with incredible clarity. She was perfect. Not a single mark, not a single trace of the darkness that had tried to claim her mother just twenty-four hours earlier.

"Victoria," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with pure, unadulterated love. "Her name is Victoria Caldwell."

Owen leaned down, looking at his tiny niece. The scarred, hardened soldier who had faced death on foreign battlefields and drawn a sword against corporate monsters let out a quiet, choked breath. He gently reached out a massive finger, and Victoria’s tiny hand instantly clamped around it with surprising strength.

"She’s got a Caldwell grip," Owen choked out, a rare, breathtaking smile breaking across his face.

Just then, Maya Vance tapped lightly on the delivery room glass, holding up a tablet with a glowing green headline. She gave a subtle, victorious nod.

Evelyn looked down at Victoria, kissing her tiny forehead. The trial was over. The birth was complete. The healing could finally begin.
