Chapter 6 - Midnight at the Iron Gates

The blizzard raged with unmatched fury as the heavy black SUV smashed through the ornamental iron gates of Blackthorn Hall. The metal grilles snapped like dry twigs, sending sharp iron fragments spraying across the snow-covered driveway.
Inside the vehicle, the dashboard light illuminated Evelyn’s pale, resolute face. Her right hand was bound tight in clean white bandages, rested firmly over the curve of her stomach. beside her, Owen operated the steering wheel with cold, practiced precision, his cavalry saber resting on the center console between them.
“The estate’s emergency generator was activated fifteen minutes ago,” Owen said, glancing at a thermal tactical display mounted on the dash. “Main security grid is down, but three vehicles are idling in the courtyard. Sloane isn’t alone.”
“She wouldn’t be,” Evelyn replied, her voice smooth and venomously calm. “Sloane never operates without cover. She’s had Arthur Vance holding her hand every step of the way.”
The SUV slid to a silent stop behind a row of ancient pine trees overlooking the blacksmith courtyard—the very place where, just hours earlier, Evelyn’s life had been thrust into the burning coals.
Through the heavy swirl of snow, the glass-walled hall looked like a glowing tomb. The chandeliers inside were flickering under the backup power. Shadowy figures moved frantically across the grand hall, throwing boxes into leather shipping crates.
Evelyn watched through the tinted glass as a familiar silhouette paced back and forth near the marble fireplace.
It was Grant.
He was holding a crystal decanter, pouring amber liquor with a hand that shook so violently half of it spilled across the antique wooden desk. Standing opposite him was Sloane, dressed in a black cashmere coat, furiously typing on a secure laptop while Arthur Vance—the family’s trusted advisor—stuffed stacks of bearer bonds into a steel briefcase.
“They’re liquidating,” Owen noted softly, pulling the charging handle of his tactical sidearm back with a sharp, mechanical click. “They know the SEC wire arrives at dawn. They’re fleeing the country on a private flight out of Teterboro.”
“Not before I take back what belongs to my daughter,” Evelyn said. She reached over, resting her hand on the hilt of Owen’s cavalry saber. “Give me ten seconds after you cut the power. Then bring the steel.”
Owen looked at his sister, a grim smile cutting across his scarred face. “Ten seconds. Don’t miss.”
Owen slammed a heavy red toggle switch on the dash.
A high-frequency EMP jammer hidden in the SUV’s bumper discharged with a low hum. Instantly, every light inside Blackthorn Hall went pitch black. The emergency generators shrieked and died. The perimeter floodlights vanished, plunging the estate into absolute darkness, save for the pale glow of the moonlight reflected off the snow.
Screams echoed from inside the hall.
BOOM.
Owen kicked open the side reinforced glass door, sending sharp shards raining onto the floor like diamonds.
The cold winter air rushed into the hall, blowing snow down the grand aisle where the auction tables had stood. Sloane gasped, dropping her laptop, while Arthur Vance scrambled backward, clutching his briefcase to his chest.
“Who’s there?!” Grant screamed into the darkness, his voice cracking with sheer terror as he leveled a silver-plated revolver toward the entrance. “I’ll shoot! I swear to God I’ll shoot!”
Through the swirling mist of snow and shadow, a single pair of footsteps echoed against the marble floor.
Click. Click. Click.
The sound was measured, calm, and hauntingly familiar.
A match flared in the darkness.
The tiny orange flame illuminated Evelyn’s face. She stood ten feet away from Grant, her eyes burning brighter than the dying ember bed behind her.
“You always did have terrible aim, Grant,” Evelyn said softly, throwing the lit match straight into the alcohol Grant had spilled on the desk.

FWOOSH!
A line of blue fire erupted across the antique wood, casting long, terrifying shadows across the room.
