Chapter 22 - THE LETTER THOMAS NEVER SENT

The letter was hidden beneath the photograph.

Caitlyn found it at 2:13 in the morning.

The envelope had never been sealed.

HELENA was written across the front.

Inside, her father’s handwriting filled four pages.

Caitlyn read them twice.

Then called Damian.

He answered on the first ring.

“Are you okay?”

“I found something.”

He was silent.

“A letter.”

“To whom?”

“Your mother.”

Twenty-seven minutes later, Damian walked through the front door with his arm in a sling and Marco behind him.

Caitlyn stared.

“You left the hospital.”

“The doctor said I could.”

Marco coughed.

Caitlyn looked at him.

“He threatened to leave anyway.”

“Traitor,” Damian muttered.

Marco disappeared toward the kitchen.

Caitlyn handed Damian the letter.

He sat.

Read.

His expression changed line by line.

Thomas wrote that Helena had been frightened.

That Damian’s father had discovered she was collecting evidence.

That Thomas had arranged passports for Helena and six-year-old Dominic.

That he wanted Laura—Caitlyn’s mother—to help them disappear.

There was no affair.

No secret romance.

Only friendship.

And desperation.

At the bottom, Thomas had written:

Laura knows everything.

If we fail, she will protect both children.

Damian lowered the paper.

“Your mother knew.”

“Yes.”

“And never told you.”

“No.”

Caitlyn laughed softly.

“Apparently secrecy was contagious.”

Damian looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what part?”

“All of it.”

She sat beside him.

“I’m still angry.”

“I know.”

“But I also understand why Rebecca wanted the story buried.”

Damian nodded.

“Your parents risked their lives because of me.”

“Because of a child.”

“Me.”

“A child.”

Caitlyn touched the paper.

“My father didn’t save you because he expected you to owe him.”

Damian looked away.

“He tried because it was right.”

“Yes.”

For a long time neither spoke.

Then Damian said, “I spent most of my life believing kindness had a price.”

Caitlyn looked at him.

“And?”

“I married someone determined to bankrupt that theory.”

She smiled despite herself.

“Good.”

The next morning they met Rebecca.

Not in an office.

Not in a warehouse.

At the Elmore Center.

She requested it.

Noah sat beside Caitlyn.

Evelyn across from Rebecca.

Damian remained standing.

Rebecca looked exhausted.

“I was wrong about Thomas.”

Caitlyn nodded.

“Yes.”

Rebecca looked at Damian.

“I was wrong about you too.”

Damian’s expression stayed unreadable.

“Maybe.”

“I thought you knew Helena was your mother when you gave your father the list.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know that now.”

“Why now?”

“Julian had the original personnel file.”

She placed it on the table.

“Your father deliberately altered the records you received. Helena was listed under another name.”

Damian opened the file.

Eleanor Voss.

He stared at it.

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“I blamed you for twenty years.”

Damian closed the folder.

“You had reason.”

“No.”

“I gave him the list.”

“You were manipulated.”

“I still gave it.”

Rebecca’s voice sharpened.

“And how long do you intend to keep punishing yourself because a monster used you?”

Nobody spoke.

Damian looked at her.

For once, he had no answer.

Rebecca reached into her bag.

Marco tensed.

She placed a flash drive on the table.

“This contains everything.”

“What everything?” Caitlyn asked.

“Accounts. Properties. Victims. Payments. Judges. Police officers. Politicians.”

Marco swore quietly.

Rebecca looked at Damian.

“Your father’s entire network.”

Damian stared at the drive.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“You kidnapped Noah.”

Noah raised a finger.

“Still technically debatable.”

Caitlyn glared.

He lowered it.

Rebecca continued.

“I wanted restitution.”

“You wanted destruction.”

“Yes.”

“Why change your mind?”

Rebecca looked around the center.

Patients moved through the hallway outside.

Families.

Therapists.

Children.

People rebuilding lives.

“I saw what you did with the money.”

She looked at Caitlyn.

“And what she made you become.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“She didn’t make me anything.”

For the first time Rebecca smiled.

“No.”

She nodded.

“She just reminded you that you had a choice.”

Damian looked at Caitlyn.

That afternoon Hamilton Holdings released the entire archive to federal investigators and independent auditors.

The market reacted immediately.

Stock down thirty-one percent.

Three board members resigned.

Two banks froze credit lines.

News networks ran Damian’s face all night.

SON OF CRIME DYNASTY OPENS FAMILY ARCHIVES.

HAMILTON HOLDINGS FACES POSSIBLE COLLAPSE.

Caitlyn sat beside Damian on the couch.

The same couch where she had once rested her head on his shoulder and asked whether he was happy.

Now financial analysts on television were predicting the destruction of everything his family built.

“You regret it?” she asked.

“No.”

“Not even a little?”

Damian considered.

“I regret that Vincent is going to talk about liquidity for the next six months.”

Caitlyn laughed.

His phone rang.

Vincent.

Damian answered.

“What?”

Vincent didn’t bother with hello.

“We have a problem.”

“Which one?”

“The board.”

“What about it?”

“They’re calling an emergency vote.”

Damian sat up.

“To remove me?”

“No.”

Vincent paused.

“To remove Caitlyn.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Why me?”

Vincent’s answer came through speakerphone.

“Because someone leaked documents claiming the Elmore Foundation illegally received three hundred million dollars in Hamilton assets.”

Damian’s face changed.

Caitlyn stared at the television.

A new headline appeared.
