Chapter 24 - THE HOUSE THAT WASN’T A FORTRESS

They had built the Hudson house to prove Damian could live without walls.
That night, Julian turned that choice against him.
By the time they arrived, the gate guards were alive but unconscious.
The security system had been disabled.
The front door stood open.
Caitlyn grabbed Damian’s arm.
“You’re bleeding.”
His shoulder wound had reopened beneath his jacket.
“I don’t care.”
“I do.”
Marco checked his weapon.
“Police are six minutes out.”
Damian looked at the house.
“We don’t have six minutes.”
Caitlyn understood.
Evelyn was inside.
They entered through the kitchen.
Family photographs had been smashed.
Noah’s guitars lay broken across the floor.
Caitlyn felt anger replace fear.
Julian had chosen those objects deliberately.
He wanted Damian to see his safe life violated.
“He wants you angry,” she whispered.
“I am angry.”
“He wants you stupid.”
Damian looked at her.
“I married against type.”
She almost smiled.
A voice came from the living room.
“Touching.”
Julian stood beside the fireplace.
Evelyn sat in a chair.
Her hands were tied.
A gun pressed against her shoulder.
“Damian,” Evelyn whispered.
“I’m fine.”
Julian laughed.
“She lies beautifully.”
Damian stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
“I spent my entire childhood hearing those words.”
“What words?”
“Damian.”
Julian’s face twisted.
“Your name.”
Damian stopped.
“Our father talked about you constantly.”
“You said he tried to kill you.”
“He did.”
“Why?”
“Because I failed.”
Julian’s smile disappeared.
“He sent me to kill Helena.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Caitlyn stared.
Damian’s voice went quiet.
“You killed my mother.”
“No.”
Julian’s gun trembled.
“I couldn’t.”
“Then who did?”
“Our father.”
For the first time, Julian looked almost human.
“I warned Helena.”
Rebecca appeared behind Marco at the doorway.
Everyone turned.
She held no weapon.
“Julian.”
His face hardened.
“You.”
“You warned Helena because you loved her.”
Damian stared at him.
Julian said nothing.
Rebecca moved closer.
“She chose Thomas’s help instead of yours.”
“Shut up.”
“And you hated Thomas for it.”
“Shut up.”
“You told our father where she was going.”
Julian raised the gun toward Rebecca.
Caitlyn understood.
“You didn’t pull the trigger.”
Julian looked at her.
“No.”
“But you gave him the location.”
Silence.
Damian’s entire body went still.
Julian laughed weakly.
“Now you understand.”
“Yes.”
“You and I are the same.”
“No.”
Julian’s face changed.
Damian continued.
“I gave him names without knowing what he would do.”
“You think that absolves you?”
“No.”
Damian stepped closer.
“I spent years accepting what I did.”
Julian shook his head.
“You hide behind her.”
He pointed at Caitlyn.
“You built charities. Married your secretary. Put photographs on walls.”
“Yes.”
“You think that makes you good?”
“No.”
Damian looked around their destroyed living room.
“It makes me responsible for what I do next.”
Julian fired.
Marco moved.
Rebecca screamed.
Evelyn dropped sideways.
The bullet hit the wall.
Damian lunged.
He struck Julian once.
Twice.
The gun slid across the floor.
Julian fell.
Damian climbed over him.
Hit him again.
Blood appeared.
Again.
“Damian!”
Caitlyn grabbed his shoulder.
He shook her off.
Julian laughed through broken teeth.
“There you are.”
Damian froze.
Julian smiled.
“The real you.”
Caitlyn’s stomach dropped.
That was exactly what Julian wanted.
Damian looked at his fist.
Then at Caitlyn.
She did not tell him to stop.
She did not beg.
She simply looked at him.
The choice was his.
Damian slowly stood.
Julian stared.
“What are you doing?”
Damian stepped back.
“No.”
Julian’s smile disappeared.
“Finish it.”
“No.”
“You coward.”
Damian looked at him.
“My father taught me that dead enemies were the only safe enemies.”
Sirens approached.
Damian continued.
“He was wrong about almost everything.”
Marco cuffed Julian.
Evelyn began crying.
Damian untied her.
She grabbed his face.
“My boy.”
He closed his eyes.
For the first time since Caitlyn had known him, Damian Hamilton let someone besides her see him cry.
Police entered.
Paramedics followed.
Rebecca stood alone near the broken window.
Caitlyn approached her.
“What happens now?”
Rebecca watched Julian being taken away.
“Now I learn how to live after revenge.”
“That sounds difficult.”
“Yes.”
Caitlyn smiled faintly.
“You could start by volunteering at the center.”
Rebecca stared at her.
“You’re serious?”
“We need accountants.”
A laugh escaped Rebecca.
Small.
Unexpected.
Maybe the first in years.
Across the room Damian sat beside Evelyn.
Caitlyn walked toward him.
He looked around at the destroyed home.
“I failed.”
She sat beside him.
“What?”
“I wanted this place safe.”
“It was.”
“Julian got inside.”
“And he left in handcuffs.”
Damian looked at the broken photographs.
Caitlyn picked one up.
Their wedding.
The glass was shattered.
The photograph underneath was untouched.
She handed it to him.
“A home isn’t safe because no one can enter it.”
Damian looked at her.
“It’s safe because the people inside it know who they are.”
He stared at the photograph.
Then pulled Caitlyn carefully against his uninjured shoulder.
She rested her head there.
Sirens flashed through the windows.
Police crossed the hallway.
Marco argued with a paramedic.
Rebecca helped Evelyn stand.
Nothing about the room was peaceful.
And yet Caitlyn closed her eyes.
Damian looked down.
“Tired?”
“Very.”
His arm tightened around her.
Then Noah called from the doorway.
He stared at his destroyed guitars.
There was a long silence.
“Okay.”
Everyone turned.
Noah pointed toward the wreckage.
“Now I want somebody dead.”
Caitlyn started laughing.
Evelyn laughed.
Marco laughed.
Even Damian did.
Noah looked offended.
“I’m serious.”
And somehow, standing in the ruins of the house they had built to prove their lives could change, the family laughed until the police officers began staring.
Because Julian had come to destroy their home.
May you like
Instead, he had proven something none of them had understood before.
The walls were never what held them together.
