Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

For the next twelve days, the Vance estate operated like a theater of the macabre.

Every morning at seven, I wheeled Richard into the sunlit breakfast pavilion overlooking Lake Michigan. I spooned soft scrambled eggs into his mouth, wiped his chin with a linen napkin, and endured Eleanor Vance’s theatrical sighs from the head of the table.

“Poor Richard,” the seventy-five-year-old matriarch would murmur, dabbing her wrinkled lips with her silk handkerchief, her fingers heavy with sapphire rings. “He was always so driven, so relentlessly ambitious. It breaks a mother’s heart to see him reduced to an empty vessel. We must bear this cross with dignity, Ethan.”

“We will, Mother,” Ethan would reply, buttering his brioche with smug satisfaction. “The proxy restructuring committee has approved the emergency resolution. The board meets tomorrow morning at ten in the grand boardroom at the Drake Hotel. Once the court-certified guardianship is ratified by the voting trustees, we sign the merger with Vitalis Health.”

Sitting behind Richard’s chair, my hands tightened around the rubber grips.

Vitalis Health.

The biomedical conglomerate where my ex-husband, Miguel, had worked for six years. The firm where he had spent the last two months boasting about a massive, career-making corporate acquisition that would elevate him to vice president of regional logistics.

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity.

Ethan wasn't just selling Richard’s company; he was orchestrating an illegal leveraged buyout through Vitalis Health, stripping Vance Therapeutics of its sixty-four patented oncology drug formulations and selling them to an offshore holding entity for a fifty-million-dollar private kickback.

And Miguel—my spineless, cheating ex-husband—was the administrative courier moving the logistics manifests between the corporate suites.

That evening, as I was packing Richard’s formal black tuxedo for the supposed “ceremonial tribute” the board was holding in his honor, Richard stood by the private window of his study, reviewing a encrypted digital tablet I had retrieved from his hidden floor safe.

“Tomorrow is the reckoning, Maya,” Richard said, his reflection in the glass dark and imposing. “Ethan believes he is wheeling me onto that stage to sit like a silent prop while he delivers the closing address and signs the merger documents. He invited every major shareholder, the press, and the executive leadership of Vitalis Health.”

“Vitalis Health will have their acquisition team in the front row,” I said, my voice steady. “Including my ex-husband.”

Richard turned around, a slow, predatory smirk touching his lips. “Is that so? The man who traded you for an office promotion?”

“The very same.”

Richard walked across the hardwood floor, stopping inches from me. He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping my chin, tilting my face upward.

“Then tomorrow, Maya, you won't be wearing caregiver scrubs,” Richard whispered, his eyes blazing with a fierce, protective brilliance. “You’ll be standing beside me as the executive vice chair of the Vance Family Trust. Let’s see how your former family looks when they realize whose table they’ve been begging scraps from.”

The next morning, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with three hundred high-profile investors, corporate attorneys, and financial journalists. Flashbulbs strobed against the gilded crystal chandeliers.

At the VIP reception table near the stage, my ex-mother-in-law, Ofelia, sat draped in an emerald satin dress she clearly couldn't afford, sipping vintage champagne beside Miguel and his mistress, Valerie. Miguel was wearing a brand-new tailored charcoal suit, laughing loudly with Ethan Vance, basking in the glow of corporate triumph.

“Look at my son,” Ofelia bragged loudly to the wife of a bank director sitting beside them. “Vice President of Logistics at thirty-five! When a man cuts away the dead weight in his life, success comes naturally!”

Miguel smiled, kissing Valerie’s cheek, adjusting his silk tie with arrogant pride. “Today we finalize the Vance acquisition, Mother. Our stock options alone will clear two million by Friday.”

At that moment, the double mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The master of ceremonies stepped to the podium, his voice booming over the sound system:

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed members of the board... please welcome the founder and CEO of Vance Therapeutics, Mr. Richard Vance.”

A hush fell over the room.

Ethan and Chloe stood near the podium, their faces arranged in somber, theatrical expressions of filial grief, ready to guide the motorized wheelchair up the custom stage ramp.

Down the center aisle, the crowd parted.

I walked forward.

I was not wearing my nurse’s uniform. I wore a tailored, floor-length gown of midnight-navy silk, my hair swept up into an elegant chignon, diamond studs flashing at my ears.

And walking beside me—tall, magnificent, perfectly upright, his hand securely holding mine—was Richard Vance.
