Chapter 4 - The Lion Walks

The collective gasp from three hundred people sounded like a tidal wave crashing against the marble walls of the Drake ballroom.

A champagne glass slipped from Ofelia’s fingers. It shattered on the parquet floor, crystal fragments and golden liquid splashing across the hem of her emerald satin gown.

Beside her, Miguel bolted upright from his chair, his eyes bulging from their sockets, his mouth opening and closing in absolute, horrified disbelief.

“M-Maya?!” Miguel gasped, his voice cracking into a shrill, strangled squeak. “What... how... what is she doing here?!”

On the elevated stage, Ethan Vance turned the color of curdled milk.

His hand, which had been holding a gold pen above the fifty-million-dollar merger contract, began to shake so violently that the ink splattered across the signature line. Chloe staggered backward two steps, clutching the velvet podium curtain, her painted smile instantly decomposing into a mask of pure terror.

Richard didn't limp.

He climbed the three wooden steps of the stage with the effortless, powerful stride of an apex predator returning to his rightful pride. Every step of his polished Italian leather oxfords echoed through the stunned silence of the room.

He didn't look at Ethan. He didn't look at Chloe.

He walked straight to the center podium, adjusted the gooseneck microphone with one strong hand, and looked out over the sea of frozen billionaires, journalists, and investors.

“Good morning, shareholders,” Richard’s voice resonated through the high ceilings, rich, smooth, and laced with lethal irony. “I apologize for the dramatic entrance. But rumors of my permanent incapacity have been... greatly exaggerated.”

Flashbulbs detonated in a blinding frenzy. Reporters surged forward against the velvet ropes, shouting over one another, cameras rolling live on the regional business networks.

Ethan scrambled to the microphone, sweat pouring down his temples, soaking his collar. “Richard! This... this is a medical miracle! The family was told... the doctors said—"

“The doctors you bribed, Ethan?” Richard interrupted, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that carried through every speaker in the hall.

Richard turned slightly, gesturing toward the back doors.

Four uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Special Financial Crimes Division stepped into the room, flanked by two armed federal agents from the Department of Health and Human Services.

“For the past eight months,” Richard announced, pulling a certified forensic folder from the inside of his tailored tuxedo, “my brother Ethan, his wife Chloe, and several corrupt executives at Vitalis Health have engaged in a coordinated conspiracy to commit corporate treason, grand larceny, and attempted capital murder.”

The room erupted into absolute chaos.

“Lies! He’s delusional from brain trauma!” Chloe shrieked into the dead air, but her voice was swallowed by the roar of the crowd.

“Marked as Exhibit A,” Richard continued, his hand gesturing to the massive presentation screens above the stage, where our digital evidence flashed in high definition: “The altered toxicology reports showing systematic Rocuronium and succinylcholine dosing. Marked as Exhibit B: The offshore escrow accounts in Belize holding eight million dollars in kickback funds transferred from Vitalis Health to Ethan Vance’s shell LLC.”

Richard’s gaze shifted from the stage down to Table 1, locking directly onto Miguel Torres.

Miguel was trembling so hard his knees banged against the wooden table leg. Valerie had already grabbed her purse and was desperately trying to push her way through the reporters toward the emergency exit.

“And marked as Exhibit C,” Richard’s voice cut through the noise like a guillotine, “the internal logistics routing manifests authorized by Junior Logistics Manager Miguel Torres, detailing the illegal diversion of sixty-four proprietary oncology patents to private servers in Panama.”

Two federal agents walked straight down the center aisle, stopping right behind Miguel’s chair.

“Miguel Torres?” the lead agent demanded, pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for federal corporate espionage, interstate transport of stolen property, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.”

Ofelia let out an unearthly, animalistic wail. She lunged forward, clawing at the agent’s sleeve, tears streaming down her powdered cheeks. “No! Not my son! Miguel is an executive! He didn't do anything! It was that woman! Maya did this! She’s taking revenge on us because Miguel left her!”

The agent shoved Ofelia aside with practiced ease. “Stand back, ma’am, or you’ll be booked for obstruction of justice.”

The cold steel cuffs clicked around Miguel’s wrists with a sickening double-snap.

As they hauled him toward the aisle, his face pale as a sheet, he caught my eye standing on the stage beside Richard.

“Maya!” Miguel wept, his arrogant composure completely shattered into pathetic, whimpering pieces. “Maya, please! Tell them! We were married for twelve years! I made a mistake with Valerie, but we’re family! Tell them to drop the charges!”

I stood tall in my midnight-navy gown, my spine straight, my chin lifted high under the blazing chandeliers.

I looked down at the man who had discarded me, who had let his mother call me a burden, who had thought I was nothing without his name.

“You told me four years ago that a woman builds her family by maintaining the home, Miguel,” I said, my voice carrying clearly over the hushed crowd. “Well, I just cleaned house. And you’re the garbage.”

The officers dragged him out the double doors as Ofelia collapsed onto the floor, wailing into the wet carpet, completely destroyed, abandoned by the high-society friends who scattered away from her like rats from a sinking ship.
