Chapter 5 - The Staged Failure

Two weeks passed.
Every morning, Daniel placed the pink capsules beside my breakfast plate. Every morning, I palmed them into my pocket and hid them in an airtight evidence safe inside the spare tire compartment of my car.
Meanwhile, my body blossomed in secret.
At six weeks, I visited an independent OB-GYN forty miles out of town under my maiden name. The ultrasound showed a strong, steady heartbeat—a tiny, rhythmic flicker on the black-and-white monitor that brought tears of fierce, protective joy to my eyes. The baby was completely healthy, entirely untouched by the poison they had tried to feed me.
Now, it was time to spring the second phase of the trap.
On a rainy Thursday evening, I invited Emily and Daniel to sit in the living room. I wore an oversized gray sweater, left my hair unbrushed, and kept my eyes rimmed with red makeup to simulate days of relentless crying. On the coffee table lay a fabricated medical report from a private lab, stamped with fake hormone panels showing zero ovarian reserve.
Daniel sat on the sofa beside me, holding my left hand. Emily sat in the armchair opposite us, leaning forward with an expression of manufactured, aching sympathy.
“I got the final results from the downtown specialist this morning,” I whispered, letting my voice crack convincingly.
Emily picked up the paper, skimming the numbers she believed her capsules had engineered. A tiny, almost imperceptible smirk tugged at the corner of her mouth before she quickly smoothed her face into mourning.
“Oh, Livvy...” Emily breathed, moving to kneel beside my knees. “Oh, sweetie, no... the ovarian reserve is completely depleted. The follicles aren't responding.”
Daniel pulled me into his chest, burying his face in my hair. “It’s over, isn’t it?” he said, his voice trembling with an actor’s grief. “All these years... we tried everything, Livvy. Everything.”
“I failed you,” I sobbed into his shoulder, giving them the exact performance they had spent five years waiting to see. “I can’t give you a family, Daniel. My body is broken.”
“Don't you ever say that,” Daniel said fiercely, gripping my arms and looking into my eyes. “You are my wife. But we don't have to give up on our dream of a baby. We have options.”
He looked across at Emily. The cue was set.
Emily took my hands, squeezing them tightly. “Olivia, listen to me. I’ve thought about this for months. I love you more than anyone in the world. If you can’t produce viable eggs or carry... let me do it. Let me donate my egg and carry Daniel’s child for us.”
She leaned in, her eyes wide, playing the saint.
“It will be our baby, Olivia. A Carter baby. I will carry it, give birth, and hand that child directly into your arms the second it’s born. You’ll be the mother. Legally, emotionally, entirely.”
I looked at my sister—the girl who had poisoned my breakfast, who was sleeping with my husband, and who was currently trying to steal my family’s entire legacy while smiling in my face.
“You... you would do that for me?” I asked, letting a single tear roll down my cheek.
“In a heartbeat,” Emily said softly.
“And you, Daniel?” I asked, turning to my husband. “Would you be okay with this?”
“If it brings a child into this home and makes you whole again, Livvy,” Daniel said with absolute solemnity, “there is nothing in this world I wouldn’t do for you.”
I looked between the two of them, watching the quiet, triumphant glances they exchanged over my bowed head. They believed the game was won. They believed I was trapped in the cage they had spent five years building around me.
“All right,” I whispered, wiping my eyes and looking up with a submissive nod. “Let’s draw up the surrogacy agreements. Let’s do it Emily’s way.”

Daniel kissed my forehead, his hand trembling with pure adrenaline. “You won’t regret this, honey. I swear to you, everything is going to change.”
He was right, I thought as I rested my head back against the sofa cushions, feeling the tiny life growing inside me. Everything is about to change.
