Chapter 9 - The Reckoning and the Cell

The heavy oak doors at the back of the Grand Ballroom burst open.

Six uniformed officers from the city police department entered in formation, flanked by four plainclothes special agents wearing windbreakers marked DEA DIVERSION TASK FORCE and STATE PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE.

Lead Investigator David Miller stepped forward, a thick sheaf of signed judicial warrants in his hand.

“Daniel Carter, Emily Carter,” Investigator Miller announced, his voice carrying over the stunned hush of the crowd. “Warrants have been issued for your immediate arrest on charges of felony aggravated battery through clandestine administration of scheduled substances, medical insurance fraud, corporate grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit fiduciary embezzlement.”

Daniel spun toward me, his tailored facade completely shattered, his veins bulging against his collar. “Olivia, what have you done?! You’re crazy! I did everything for you! For this marriage!”

“You poisoned my food every morning for five years to steal my father’s company,” I said, looking down at him from the edge of the stage without a single flicker of hesitation. “You didn't build a marriage, Daniel. You built an indictment.”

“Olivia, please!” Emily wailed as two female officers seized her arms, pushing her against a round banquet table and pinning her wrists behind her back. “I’m your sister! Mom told you to take care of me! You can’t do this to your own blood!”

“You forfeited our blood the day you put chemical poison into my hands and smiled while I cried over empty cribs,” I answered coldly.

The click of steel handcuffs snapping over Emily’s wrists echoed across the ballroom. The socialites who had fawned over her twenty minutes earlier pulled their phones out, recording every second of her hysterical sobs as she was dragged down the central aisle, her emerald satin dress tearing on a chair leg.

Daniel struggled against two federal agents as they forced him to his knees, pinning his arms behind him. “The contracts!” he spat, looking up at Arthur Croft, who stood calmly at the base of the stage. “We signed the joint governance! I have rights to the trust!”

Arthur stepped forward, pulling a stamped court order from his breast pocket.

“You signed a verified asset indemnification confession under Section 12B, Mr. Carter,” Arthur said evenly. “Every asset of Vanguard Urban Partners has been frozen under an emergency civil attachment order. Your commercial properties have been placed into receivership to pay restitution to the Carter Estate. You don't own eighteen million dollars. You own nothing.”

Daniel looked up at me, his eyes wild with terror and despair as the reality of complete ruin collapsed over his head.

I reached down and rested my hand firmly over my stomach.

“And Daniel?” I said softly into the microphone. “The baby you tried so desperately to prevent? He’s arriving in six months. And he will never know your name.”

The ballroom broke into a storm of cameras and flashing strobes as the police escorted the two conspirators out into the cold night rain, leaving only the wreckage of their vanity behind them.
