Chapter 15 - The Family We Bled For

The retaliation was swift, absolute, and merciless.

Within forty-eight hours of rescuing Ricardo from St. Petersburg, the shadow network descended upon Rome. We didn't ask the Commission for permission; we didn't call for a vote. We took Salvatore’s estate by storm.

Ricardo, patched up and running on pure, lethal adrenaline, walked through the front doors of his uncle’s villa and shot Don Salvatore dead in front of the entire Italian syndicate. He claimed absolute control over the Commission, cementing his rule with a brutality that ensured no one would ever question his authority—or my place beside him—ever again.

But the only thing that mattered to me was the small, terrified boy locked in the upstairs bedroom.

When I broke through the door, Leo was huddled in the corner, clutching the wooden block I had given him in New York. When he saw me, he didn't hesitate. He ran as fast as his little legs could carry him, throwing himself into my arms. I buried my face in his curls, sobbing uncontrollably, promising him over and over again that I would never, ever let him go.

Six months later.

The New York penthouse was completely transformed.

The cold, sterile museum had been replaced by the chaotic, vibrant warmth of a real home. Toys were scattered across the imported white marble floors. The abstract, moody artwork had been replaced by finger paintings and framed photographs of the three of us laughing in the Sicilian sun.

I stood on the balcony, watching the sunset paint the Manhattan skyline in brilliant hues of gold and pink. The heavy gold Moretti ring glittered on my finger, reclaimed from Salvatore’s pocket, polished and permanent.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind.

Ricardo pulled me back against his solid chest, burying his face in the crook of my neck. He smelled of cedarwood, clean linen, and absolute safety.

“He finally went to sleep,” Ricardo murmured, his deep voice vibrating against my skin. “Dante is reading him a bedtime story. Though I think Dante is enjoying the book about the dragon more than Leo is.”

I laughed softly, leaning my head back against his shoulder. “He’s a good boy, Ricardo. He’s happy.”

“He is happy because he has his mother,” Ricardo said quietly, turning me around in his arms so I could look into his eyes. The dark, haunted shadows that used to plague him were entirely gone. He looked at me with a reverence, a profound and overwhelming love that still took my breath away.

He reached down, gently resting his large, calloused hand against my stomach, where a tiny, new life was just beginning to grow.

“You saved him, Clara,” Ricardo whispered, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to my lips. “You saved both of us. You walked into the dark, and you brought the light back.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck, standing on my tiptoes to kiss him back, feeling the solid, unbreakable beat of his heart.

“I didn't bring the light, Ricardo,” I smiled, looking at the man who had burned down the world to keep me safe. “We built the fire together.”

The mafia boss who feared nothing finally smiled—a genuine, breathtaking smile that reached all the way to his eyes. He lifted me into his arms, carrying me back inside our fortress, out of the cold and into the beautiful, messy, permanent life we had bled to build.

And for the first time in my life, I knew exactly where I belonged.
