Chapter 4 - The Notice at Dawn

The sunrise broke over the Montana pines in sharp ribbons of gold and frost. By 6:30 a.m., I was standing in the open bay of my workshop, wiping down a set of wrenches. The air was crisp, smelling of pine needles, morning dew, and motor oil.
A sleek black government sedan crested the gravel rise of my driveway, followed by two unmarked SUVs. They moved quietly, without sirens or flashing lights, parking in a precise tactical line beside the garage.
Special Agent Frank Morales stepped out of the lead sedan. He was a lean, sharp-eyed man in a crisp charcoal suit, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. Flanking him were two United States Marshals wearing tactical vests with gold badges pinned to their chests.
"Commander Vance," Morales said, coming to a clean halt and offering a crisp, respectful salute. "Special Agent Morales, JAG Special Investigations. It’s an honor to finally meet you in person, sir."
"At ease, Frank," I said, setting the rag down on the steel bench. "I see Marcus sent the heavy division."
"When a Tier-1 Commander flags regional public corruption with federal transport implications, the Pentagon doesn't send a warning letter," Morales replied, unzipping his briefcase and pulling out three bound stacks of documents bearing the gold seal of the United States District Court. "We've had an active forensic audit running since 0200 hours. Vance Freight Logistics is in deep. Dominic Vance has been using county seizure authority to confiscate commercial assets, funneling contraband across federal logging roads, and doctoring municipal tax records."
Morales handed me the top file.
"And Amelia?" I asked, keeping my voice level.
"Her personal accounts were flagged at midnight," Morales said quietly. "A wire transfer of seventy-five thousand dollars cleared into an offshore holding company registered in her maiden name two days ago. Dominic funded it directly from an off-the-books freight escrow account. She wasn't just his accomplice; she was acting as his primary financial broker to launder the proceeds through her commercial staging business."
The front door of the main house swung open with a bang.
Amelia stepped onto the porch wearing a silk robe, clutching a steaming ceramic mug. She froze, her gaze sweeping across the federal plates, the armed Marshals, and Morales standing beside me at the workbench.
Her initial look of irritation quickly curdled into condescending anger. She marched down the wooden steps, slippers crunching against the frost-covered gravel.
"Logan, what is this circus?" she demanded, gesturing sharply at the black vehicles. "Who authorized these people to block my driveway? If this is about your stupid zoning dispute, I told you Dominic is already handling it. Tell your buddies to move their cars before I call the sheriff’s department myself."
Agent Morales didn't flinch. He turned smoothly, pulling an official federal credential wallet from his breast pocket and flipping it open in front of her face.
"Mrs. Vance, I am Special Agent Frank Morales with the Department of Defense Inspector General, operating under joint authority with the United States Marshals Service," he said in a cold, flat tone. "I strongly advise you not to make any phone calls. As of 0400 this morning, a federal grand jury in the Western District of Montana issued sealed indictments for wire fraud, extortion, and conspiracy to violate federal transport statutes."
Amelia's mug slipped from her fingers. It shattered on the driveway stones, spilling dark coffee across the white frost.
"W-what?" she stammered, taking a hurried step backward, her eyes darting frantically between Morales and the armed Marshals. "This is a mistake. My husband is just a retired mechanic! He fixes trucks! You have no right to come onto our private property—"
"This property is owned solely under Commander Logan Vance's federal veteran land grant," Morales interrupted calmly, producing a bright red legal notice. "Furthermore, by order of the Federal District Court, all domestic accounts held under your name have been frozen pending asset forfeiture proceedings. You are ordered to surrender your passport, communication devices, and financial records immediately."
Amelia turned to me, her face pale as ash, her bottom lip trembling. "Logan... Logan, tell them! Tell them who I am! What did you do? Did you make up some ridiculous lie because you were mad about the diner?"
May you like
"I didn't lie about anything, Amelia," I said softly, looking her dead in the eyes. "I just told the truth to people who actually have the power to enforce the law."
Before she could speak, the distant growl of a heavy V8 engine echoed up the mountain road. Dominic Vance’s black F-250 was speeding toward the property, red and blue lights flashing aggressively against the morning mist.
