Chapter 5 - The Standoff on the Ridge

Dominic’s truck skidded to a halt at the edge of the gravel driveway, kicking up a shower of dirt and rock. He threw the door open, stepping out with his hand resting heavily on the butt of his holstered sidearm. His deputy, a younger man named Miller, climbed out of the passenger side looking visibly nervous.
"What the hell is going on here?" Dominic bellowed, storming past the perimeter fence with his chest puffed out. "This is Blackwood County jurisdiction! Nobody operates on my turf without checking in with my office first!"
He hadn't bothered to look closely at the badges on the Marshals' vests. He was accustomed to rolling over state troopers and town officials with pure volume and intimidation.
"Dominic, help!" Amelia cried out, trying to move toward him, but a Marshal stepped firmly into her path, his hand resting calmly on his chest rig. "They're trying to take our accounts! Logan set this up!"
Dominic’s gaze snapped directly to me. A vicious sneer spread across his face.
"I warned you yesterday, boy," Dominic snarled, pointing a thick finger at my chest. "I told you what happens to trash that doesn't learn its place. You think calling a few private security rent-a-cops is gonna save your land? I'll have every one of you locked in county holding by noon for criminal trespass and interfering with a peace officer."
He unclipped the retention strap on his holster and took two aggressive steps forward.
Agent Morales stepped between us, holding up a thick manila folder and a federal search warrant. "Sheriff Dominic Vance. I am Special Agent Morales, Federal Task Force. You are currently interfering with an active federal seizure under Title 18 of the United States Code. Step back and unbuckle your duty belt immediately."
Dominic let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Federal? You're in my valley, suit. A piece of paper from Helena don't mean jack out here. Deputy, call for county backup. We’re impounding these vehicles right now."
Deputy Miller didn't reach for his radio. He was staring at the black tactical SUVs. The side doors slid open, and four Tier-1 federal operators in full tactical gear stepped onto the gravel, carrying suppressed carbines held in low-ready position.
The air went dead silent.
"Sheriff," Deputy Miller whispered, his voice cracking. "Look at their plates. Look at the seals. That’s not Helena... that’s JSOC and the Department of Justice."
Dominic's confident swagger hitched. His eyes darted from the heavy tactical operators to Morales, and finally locked onto me.
I walked slowly out of the workshop, stopping three feet from him. The morning wind rustled the pines overhead. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't tense my muscles. I simply looked at him with the cold, measured detachment of a man who had ended conflicts across four continents before breakfast.
"You should have done your homework, Dominic," I said, my tone as quiet as falling snow. "When you pulled my background check through the county terminal, you saw a Petty Officer's administrative rating and thought I spent twenty years filing paperwork in San Diego."
Morales opened the file and read aloud with crisp precision: "Commander Logan Vance. United States Navy. Former Operations Officer, Naval Special Warfare Development Group. Recipient of the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars with Valor. Special advisor to the Department of Defense on regional counter-narcotics and domestic logistics security."
Dominic's face lost every ounce of its color. His hand fell away from his weapon as if the steel had suddenly turned white-hot.
"You..." Dominic stammered, his throat visibly working as he tried to swallow. "You're..."
"I'm the man who owns the north ridge you wanted to use as your private smuggling corridor," I said. "And you are the man who publicly committed assault on federal officer personnel on video eighteen hours ago."

"Wait," Dominic pleaded, his arrogance evaporating into a thin, desperate sweat. "Logan—Commander... we can talk about this. The land, the transport company... we can work out a commercial lease. The county can compensate you—"
"The county won't be doing anything for you, Dominic," Morales said firmly, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs open. "Because as of ten minutes ago, your deputies at the municipal station surrendered the station house to federal marshals. You are under arrest."
