Chapter 5 - The Eviction of the Traitors

The rain had turned into a relentless downpour over Bellevue by 4:00 PM.

Inside the Whitmore mansion, Vanessa stood in the grand master closet, frantically pulling designer dresses off their velvet hangers and stuffing them into leather suitcases. Her hands were shaking so violently she dropped a pair of $1,200 Christian Louboutin heels onto the hardwood floor.

"Hurry up, Grant!" Vanessa yelled toward the bedroom. "The security guard downstairs said they’re locking the gates at five!"

Grant sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, staring blankly at the wall. He was still wearing his charcoal suit pants, but his tie was undone, his collar unbuttoned, and his eyes bloodshot. In less than six hours, his net worth had plummeted from $180 million to negative equity. His corporate accounts were frozen, his black corporate Centurion card was declined at a gas station, and news of his sensational firing had already leaked to The Wall Street Journal.

"Whitmore Enterprises Ousts Founder After Debt Default."

"Grant!" Vanessa ran into the bedroom, grabbing his shoulders. "Did you hear me? We need to get your watches! The Patek Philippe, the Audemars Piguet! We can sell them for cash!"

Grant turned his head slowly, looking at her with hollow, dead eyes. "They aren't mine, Vanessa."

"What do you mean they aren't yours?"

"The watches... the cars... even the artwork in the hallway," Grant muttered, his voice raspy and stripped of all power. "They were purchased through the Whitmore Family Trust. And the Trust’s debt covenants were backed by Vanguard holdings. Claire’s lawyers filed a freeze on all physical luxury assets an hour ago."

"No... no, that's impossible!" Vanessa shrieked. "She can't take my things! The diamond necklace you gave me for my birthday—"

"Was bought with a corporate card," a sharp, smooth voice echoed from the bedroom doorway.

Vanessa spun around.

Claire walked into the master bedroom, flanked by Julian Sterling and two uniformed officers from the King County Sheriff’s Department. Claire was wearing a long, camel-wool coat draped over her shoulders, her presence commanding and serene against the backdrop of their chaotic panic.

Vanessa backed away toward the bed, clutching a designer handbag to her chest. "Claire... you have no right to enter this house without notice!"

"This is my house, Vanessa," Claire said calmly, walking toward the marble fireplace where a portrait of her and Grant had once hung. The frame was gone, replaced by a bare hook. "And as the sole managing director of the property trust, I am revoking your license to reside on these premises."

Grant stood up slowly, clutching the edge of the nightstand. "Claire... please. Look at me. We were married for eight years. You can't put us out on the street like dogs."

"You put me out on the street barefoot when I was five months pregnant, Grant," Claire reminded him, her voice devoid of heat, carrying only the absolute coldness of justice. "You gave me ten minutes. I’m feeling generous—I’ll give you five."

The lead Sheriff stepped forward, pulling a legal notice from his coat. "Mr. Whitmore, Miss Cole. You are required to vacate the premises immediately. Any personal items not cleared by corporate audit will remain on site pending asset liquidation."

"This is absurd!" Vanessa screamed, her face flushed red with hysterical tears. "Grant, do something! Call your friends! Call the mayor!"

"The mayor just canceled Grant’s seat on the charity board, Vanessa," Julian Sterling chimed in, checking his tablet with a faint smile. "And your former PR firm just dropped you as a client to avoid brand contamination."

Vanessa looked at Grant, waiting for the powerful, invincible billionaire she had seduced. But the man standing before her was broken, shrinking under his wife’s cold gaze.

"Grant..." Vanessa whispered, the horrific reality finally crashing down on her. "Do something!"

Grant looked at Claire, stepping past Vanessa as if she didn't exist. He fell to one knee on the plush rug, reaching out toward Claire’s hand.

"Claire... baby, please," Grant begged, tears finally spilling over his eyelids. "I made a mistake. Vanessa seduced me! She preyed on my stress! I was confused, I was overwhelmed by the pressure of the company! I still love you. We can fix this! Think about our son—he needs his father!"

Vanessa froze, her mouth agape in utter disbelief. "Grant?! What are you saying?!"

Claire looked down at the man kneeling at her feet. The same man who had stood at the top of the marble staircase three weeks ago and threatened to steal her baby.

She did not feel anger. She felt only a profound, liberating pity.

Claire stepped back, letting Grant’s hands fall empty into the air.

"My son will know his father, Grant," Claire said softly, touching the firm curve of her belly. "He will know him as a cautionary tale of what happens when a man trades his soul for pennies."

She turned to the Sheriff. "Escort them off my property."
