Chapter 8 - The Delivery Room Battlefield

The emergency doors of Swedish Medical Center burst open as a team of trauma nurses and obstetricians wheeled Claire’s gurney down the sterile corridor.

"GDM patient, thirty-one weeks, water broke prematurely!" the lead nurse shouted, hooking up monitoring lines as the gurney rolled toward Delivery Suite 4. "Contractions are coming two minutes apart!"

Julian ran alongside the gurney, his phone pressed to his ear. "Get Dr. Chen into the delivery room immediately! The Sterling Trust private medical team is five minutes out!"

Claire’s breath came in ragged, burning hitches. The pain was unlike anything she had experienced—a relentless, crushing force pulling at her core. Not now, she prayed frantically into her own mind, clutching the hospital sheets. Please, God, not at thirty-one weeks. He’s too small.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted at the double doors at the end of the hall.

"Let me through! I’m his father!"

Claire’s head snapped toward the sound despite the blinding agony.

Grant Whitmore was shoving past a security officer at the nurse’s station. He looked disheveled, wearing a faded gray jacket, his hair unwashed, his eyes bloodshot with manic energy.

"I have a right to be here!" Grant roared, his voice echoing off the linoleum walls. "That’s my son! She’s taking my son!"

Behind him, Vanessa sprinted through the automatic doors, wearing a cheap coat, her hair tied in a messy bun, holding her phone up as if recording the scene. "We know our rights! Grant is the biological father! You can't keep him out of the delivery room!"

"Security!" Julian yelled, stepping between Grant and the gurney as the nurses pushed Claire into Suite 4. "Restrain those people!"

"Claire!" Grant screamed, pushing past a nurse, his face contorted in a mix of panic and desperate greed. He knew that if he crossed the threshold of the delivery room and placed his signature on the birth certificate, he retained automatic parental leverage under Washington state law—leverage that could force Claire back into a settlement negotiation.

"Get out of here, Grant!" Claire cried out, her voice raw with agony as another contraction tore through her.

Grant lunged for the closing door of Suite 4, jamming his arm into the frame. "I’m signing the birth certificate, Claire! You won't rob me of my heir!"

"You don't have an heir, Grant!" Julian barked, tackling Grant away from the door and slamming his body against the hallway wall. "You have a restraining order!"

Two heavy hospital security guards tackled Grant to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back.

"Vanessa, record this!" Grant screamed from the floor, his cheek pressed against the cold tiles. "Record them denying a father his child!"

Vanessa raised her phone, her hands shaking. "This is illegal! She’s using her money to steal his parental rights!"

A cold, razor-sharp voice sliced through the hallway chaos.

"Put the phone down, Miss Cole."

An elderly, distinguished man in a dark charcoal suit stepped out of the private elevator, surrounded by four men in tactical suits.

It was Richard Vance—Arthur Vance’s younger brother and the head of Vanguard Security Operations.

Vanessa froze as two of the tactical officers stepped in front of her camera, blocking her field of view completely. One officer casually reached out, took the phone from her hand, and crushed it inside his leather-gloved palm, dropping the shattered glass onto the floor.

"Hey!" Vanessa shrieked. "That’s my phone!"

"You are on private hospital property, trespassers," Richard Vance declared coldly. "And under Federal Executive Order 112, Sterling Trust entities have full security isolation protocols."

He looked down at Grant, who was panting on the floor in handcuffs.

"Escort Mr. Whitmore to the county precinct," Richard ordered the officers. "Charge him with felony trespass, harassment, and violation of a protection order."

Inside Suite 4, the heavy doors locked with an electronic click, shutting out the noise of the hallway completely.

"Claire, look at me," Dr. Chen commanded, standing at the foot of the bed. "Forget about the hallway. Focus on me. It’s time to push."

Claire gripped the silver band on her right index finger—her grandfather's ring. The pain was immense, but as she looked at the heart monitor displaying her baby’s steady, stubborn heartbeat, the fear melted away.

She was not the broken woman in the rain anymore. She was a mother, backed by an empire, protecting her legacy.

"Push, Claire!"

Claire drew in a deep, lung-filling breath, bearing down with everything she had left in her soul.
