Chapter 4 - INSIDE THE VIPER’S NEST

The high-definition video feed on my hospital iPad lit up in crisp, color-saturated 4K resolution.

Grant stepped through the heavy wrought-iron front doors of our 12,000-square-foot estate. He didn't turn on the chandelier in the foyer. He relied only on the ambient glow of the outdoor landscape lighting.

Beside my hospital bed, Detective Miller stood silently, holding a tablet synced to the local police precinct's tactical unit.

"Tactical teams 1 and 2 are in position around the perimeter," Miller whispered into his radio headset. "Do not breach until we have clear visual confirmation of destruction of evidence or concealment of the weapon."

On the screen, Grant moved with frantic efficiency.

He didn't head upstairs to pack my overnight bag as he had promised my father. Instead, he made a direct line for his private study at the far end of the north wing.

He pulled off his navy suit jacket and tossed it onto the leather couch. He rolled up his French cuffs, his expensive gold watch glittering under the desk lamp.

"Look at his face," I whispered, holding my breath as my father adjusted the IV line in my arm. "He thinks he won."

Grant knelt beside the built-in mahogany bookcase. He slid away a false panel of custom leather-bound classics, revealing the heavy electronic keypad of his biometric safe.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Click.

The heavy steel door swung open.

Grant pulled out three thick manila envelopes—the very financial records I had been holding when he threw the architectural book at my head.

"There they are," Detective Miller said, his eyes narrowing. "The forged loan guarantees and the offshore shell company registrations."

Grant walked over to the stone fireplace in his office. He grabbed a box of long fireplace matches from the mantle and struck one. The small yellow flame flickered, casting eerie shadows across his hollow cheeks.

"He's going to burn them!" I gasped.

"Wait for it..." Detective Miller muttered into his mic. "Team Leader, stand by. Get the breach team ready on the rear patio."

On screen, Grant dropped the burning match into the fireplace grate. He tossed the first stack of papers onto the flame. The paper caught instantly, curling into black, ash-filled edges.

"Now," Miller commanded. "Move in! Execute the warrant!"

Before the words fully left Miller's mouth, the live feed picked up a loud, thunderous CRASH that echoed through the empty mansion.

The glass French doors of the study shattered into thousands of tiny shards.

Grant whirled around, his face suddenly drained of all color, the matchbox dropping from his trembling hands.

"POLICE! DON'T MOVE! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Four heavily armed tactical officers burst through the shattered glass, lasers painted bright red dots directly onto Grant's chest.

Grant froze. His hands instinctively flew into the air, but his mind was clearly spinning, trying to calculate a way out of the net.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Grant roared, his voice cracking with artificial outrage. "Do you know who I am?! I am Grant Whitmore! Get out of my house!"

"Hands behind your back! Down on your knees, now!" a tactical officer barked, stepping forward and shoving Grant down onto the hardwood floor.

Grant’s face was pressed hard against the rug—right next to the burning stack of forged financial papers.

An officer immediately stepped forward with a chemical extinguisher, spraying the fireplace to preserve what was left of the charred documents.

"You're making a massive mistake!" Grant screamed, his face flushed red as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "My wife had an accident! She's in the hospital! Call my attorney!"

Detective Miller leaned closer to the iPad screen, pressing a button on his radio.

"Unit 1, this is Detective Miller. Search the kitchen island area immediately. Look for a six-pound architectural book with blood evidence on the corner, and secure the hallway nursery monitor."

On the video feed, an officer walked into the frame holding a clear evidence bag. Inside was the heavy black book—its corner clearly stained with my dark, dried blood.

Grant looked at the evidence bag, and for the very first time since this nightmare began, genuine horror washed over his face.

He realized he hadn't cleaned the weapon before leaving for the hospital. He had been so confident in my obedience and confusion that he had left the evidence sitting in plain sight.

"Take him in," Miller commanded.
