Chapter 9 - A LIFE FOR A LIFE

By 3:00 p.m., the courtroom was suffocatingly tense.

Victoria Vance had just finished presenting the cloud audio from the nursery monitor—Grant’s cold, unfeeling voice echoing through the courtroom speakers, refusing to call an ambulance while I lay bleeding on the floor.

Members of the jury were staring at Grant with visible revulsion. Grant sat rigid, his hands trembling inside his steel wrist cuffs.

I sat at the prosecution table, pressing my hand against my lower abdomen.

Suddenly, a sharp, white-hot knife of pain sliced through my lower back.

I gasped, catching my breath.

"Claire?" Victoria whispered, glancing over at me. "Are you okay?"

"I... I'm fine," I whispered, forcing a breath. "Just a braxton-hicks contraction."

But five minutes later, another contraction struck—far more intense, twisting my core until the room blurred before my eyes.

Thirty-four weeks. It was too early.

I looked down. A small pool of fluid was spreading beneath my dress onto the polished wooden floor. My water had broken.

"Dad..." I choked out, grabbing my father’s sleeve.

Dr. Mercer instantly turned, his medical instincts kicking in. He looked down at my lap, then pressed two fingers against my wrist pulse. It was spiking wildly.

"Your Honor!" my father called out loudly, standing up and grabbing his medical bag from under the table. "My daughter is entering precipitous labor! We have an emergency!"

The courtroom erupted into instant chaos.

"Clear the well of the court!" Judge Ramos ordered, banging her gavel frantically. "Call an ambulance immediately!"

My father helped me lie down on the long prosecution bench. Pain washed over me in crushing waves. My baby was coming, triggered by the intense physical and emotional trauma of the past two weeks.

"Breathe, Claire, breathe," Dad said gently, placing a folded coat beneath my head. "I'm right here. You're doing great."

Across the room, amidst the panic and shouting, Grant saw his moment.

With two bailiffs distracted by the medical emergency and the shouting media gallery, Grant suddenly lunged sideways.

Using his heavy, metal wrist chains like a weapon, he slammed his bound hands into the side of the nearest bailiff’s neck!

The officer collapsed to the floor. Grant grabbed the officer's sidearm from his holster with his gloved hands, screaming at the room: "DON'T MOVE! NOBODY MOVE!"

Women screamed. Reporters dove under the wooden benches.

Grant stood near the side exit, his arm shaking violently as he pointed the glock directly at my father and me.

"You ruined my life!" Grant shrieked, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and completely unhinged. "All of you! I built an empire, and you tore it down over a stupid mistake!"

"Grant, put the gun down!" Detective Miller shouted, drawing his weapon from behind the bench.

"Stay back, Miller!" Grant screamed, backing toward the heavy emergency door. He swung the barrel until it was pointing straight at my chest—straight at my baby bump. "If I'm going down, Claire, you don't get to have her! Neither of you leave this room!"

A contraction hit me so hard I couldn't even scream. I clutched my father’s hand, unable to move.

"Grant!" my father shouted, stepping directly between the barrel of the gun and my body, shielding me completely with his own torso. "Look at me! You want to shoot someone? Shoot me! But you will NOT touch my daughter!"

Grant’s finger tightened on the trigger. "Get out of the way, old man!"

BANG!

A loud shot echoed like lightning inside the enclosed courtroom.
