Chapter 5 - The Mask Comes Off

Mark’s face appeared on the high-definition screen. He was sitting in his luxury SUV in the hospital parking lot below, sweat glistening on his forehead.
"Sarah! Listen to me!" Mark barked before David could even speak. "Dad just got off the phone with our family lawyer. If you cooperate with the police, we can spin this as an accidental collision! But if you don't, we are going to press charges against you for child neglect! You were the parent there! You signed off on her walking!"
David leaned his face close to the phone screen.
"Try it, Mark," David said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, deadly register.
Mark froze on the camera. The color visibly drained from his face as he realized he wasn't talking to his timid sister anymore.
"D-David?" Mark stammered, his posture collapsing. "Look, man, you need to understand—"
"I understand everything," David cut him off. "I understand that your seventeen-year-old son is a cowardly predator who assaults young girls. I understand that you and your parents are child abusers who watched a girl's leg break and forced her to walk on concrete for three hours to protect a high school basketball record."
"It was an accident!" Mark yelled, panic rising in his voice. "Tyler was just playing around!"
"We have the video footage, Mark," Arthur Pendelton stepped into the camera frame, showing his bar association badge. "I am Arthur Pendelton, head counsel for Pendelton & Associates. The video clearly shows your son raising both hands and applying full pressure to Lily's chest, throwing her down six flight stairs. It also shows you grabbing him to flee the scene."
Mark’s mouth hung open. "Who... who are you?"
"I am the man who is going to make sure your son spends his eighteen birthday in a juvenile detention facility," Arthur replied smoothly. "And as for you, Mr. Miller, I have already contacted the athletic board of Tyler's prospective universities. They have been formally notified of the pending felony charges."
"NO!" Mark screamed at the screen. "You can't do that! You're destroying his future!"
"He destroyed his own future the second he put his hands on my daughter," David snapped. "You have five minutes to get out of this hospital parking lot before Detective Vance walks downstairs with two state troopers and serves Tyler’s arrest warrant."
"David, please! He's your nephew!" Mark begged, tears of frustration welling in his eyes. "Mom is hyperventilating! Dad's blood pressure is through the roof! We're family!"
"We were family," I stepped in front of the camera, looking my brother dead in the eye through the glass screen. "Until you treated my daughter like trash on the bottom of your shoe. Don't ever call us again, Mark. Talk to our lawyer."
David ended the call with a violent tap of his thumb.
The hallway was silent again. I leaned against David's shoulder, feeling the solid, unshakable strength I had missed for the past four horrific days.
"They're going to fight dirty, Sarah," David whispered, wrapping his arm tightly around my waist. "Your mother will bring out every trick in the book. She’ll turn the entire extended family against us."
"Let her," I said, looking toward the door of Lily’s hospital room. "I spent thirty-eight years trying to keep her happy. I'm spending the rest of my life keeping Lily safe."
The door to Lily's room clicked open. A nurse stepped out, smiling gently.
"She's awake," the nurse said softly. "She's asking for both of her parents."
David and I walked into the room together. Lily’s eyes were bright despite the heavy pain medication. As soon as she saw David, tears spilled down her cheeks.
"Daddy..." she whimpered.
David rushed to her side, dropping to his knees and pressing his forehead against her small hand, sobbing openly. "I'm here, baby. Daddy's here. Nobody will ever hurt you again."
Lily looked past David, her eyes meeting mine. She saw the change in me. She saw the rage, the resolve, and the mother who was finally ready to burn down the world for her child.

She offered a tiny, weak smile and squeezed my fingers. "Thank you, Mom."
Those three words were my redemption—and the start of our war.
