Chapter 6 - The Smear Campaign Begins

By noon the following day, the peaceful quiet of Lily’s hospital room felt like a calm before a brutal storm.

Her leg was elevated in a heavy plaster casing, but color had finally returned to her toes. The doctor assured us that the surgery had saved her lower limb, though months of grueling physical therapy lay ahead.

Just as David was feeding Lily some warm broth, my phone began to buzz frantically. Then David’s phone rang. Then the landline at our home—monitored by our legal team—started receiving ping after ping.

Diane hadn't taken our refusal lying down. The golden family shield was cracking, and my mother was doing what she did best: attacking first to control the narrative.

I opened Facebook on my phone, and my stomach instantly dropped into a cold abyss.

My mother had posted a long, emotional essay accompanied by a picture of our family at a beach house three years ago—a photo where Lily looked small, uncomfortable, and pushed to the side.

Diane Miller

Heartbroken beyond words. As parents, Frank and I have sacrificed everything for our children and grandchildren. Yesterday, during a peaceful family trip to Boston, an unfortunate accident occurred where my sweet granddaughter Lily lost her balance on a staircase. Instead of accepting this sad tragedy as a family, my daughter Sarah—who has struggled with severe mental instability and emotional distress for years—is making wild, malicious fabrications.

She is claiming her 17-year-old cousin pushed her! She has involved police officers, threatened to ruin a innocent young man’s athletic future, and isolated poor Lily in a hospital while refusing to let her grandparents see her. Please pray for Sarah’s mental health during this breakdown, and pray for our family’s protection against these tragic lies.

Below the post, hundreds of comments were already pouring in from extended family, family friends, and members of my parents' country club.

"Oh Diane, I am so sorry! Sarah was always so dramatic growing up!"

"Falsely accusing a minor? That's sick! Tyler is such a good boy!"

"Sending prayers. It’s terrible when children turn on their own loving parents like this."

"Read this," I whispered, handing the screen to David.

As David read my mother’s words, a dark, terrifying vein bulged on his forehead. "She's claiming you're mentally unstable? She's telling everyone Lily fell?"

"She's trying to discredit me before the police report goes public," I said, my voice trembling not with fear, but with sheer disgust. "She wants everyone to think I’m a bitter, insane mother having a nervous breakdown."

Suddenly, a notification popped up at the top of my screen. Mark had posted a video.

I tapped on it. Mark was standing in front of his pristine suburban home, holding a framed picture of Tyler in his high school basketball jersey. He looked directly into the camera, his eyes wide with forced tears.

"My son Tyler is being framed," Mark said, his voice cracking theatrically. "My sister Sarah has held a grudge against our family for years because of her own personal failures. She is taking a tragic stumblem made by her own daughter and turning it into a witch hunt to destroy my son's life before he goes to college. We are asking the community to stand with Tyler."

"They're monstrous," David breathed, leaning his hands against the wall. "They don't care about Lily at all. They only care about their reputation."

"Let them talk," a calm, smooth voice spoke from the doorway.

Arthur Pendelton walked into the room, holding his iPad and a leather folder. A razor-sharp smile played on his lips.

"Mr. Pendelton?" I asked, looking up.

"Let them dig their own graves, Sarah," Arthur said, pulling up a chair next to Lily’s bed. "In the legal world, we call this 'self-inflicted evidence.' Your mother and brother just publicly published deliberate falsehoods to defame you, harass a minor victim, and tamper with public perception of an active felony investigation."

Arthur turned his iPad screen toward us.

"While your family was busy making theatrical videos on social media, the Boston Police Department finished their forensic analysis of the hotel stairwell security camera," Arthur continued. "And I just obtained the raw, high-definition video file."
