Chapter 4 - Echoes of the Past

The presidential suite of the St. Regis was draped in ivory silk and bathed in soft afternoon light. Classical violin music filtered through concealed speakers while Eleanor Ashford lifted a porcelain teacup to her lips. Sitting across from her was Chloe Kensington, the polished heiress of Kensington Global—the woman Eleanor had spent two years handpicking to replace me as Graham’s wife.

"By now, the paperwork should be finalized," Eleanor said with a smooth, practiced smile. "Graham was always practical. Once he realizes the divorce is behind him, the merger with your family’s firm will proceed seamlessly."

Chloe smiled coyly, tapping her manicured nails against her champagne glass. "And Maren? She won't cause any public scene?"

"Maren is a ghost, my dear," Eleanor purred, taking a slow sip of tea. "A girl from a middle-class background who never belonged in our world. I made sure she vanished from Graham’s sight, and she lacks the resources to ever re-enter it."

The double doors of the suite exploded inward with a deafening crash.

Eleanor dropped her teacup; it shattered against the Persian rug, splashing hot tea across her designer dress. Chloe gasped, leaping to her feet.

Graham walked in.

He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. His sleeves were rolled up, his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his right hand was bound in blood-stained linen. Behind him stood four uniformed NYPD officers alongside two federal agents.

"Graham!" Eleanor gasped, recovering her composure quickly as she straightened her pearls. "What is the meaning of this spectacle? You are an Ashford—you do not make scenes in public hotels!"

"I am no longer your instrument, Mother," Graham said. His voice was terrifyingly calm—the silence before a devastating storm.

He gestured to Marcus Vance, who stepped into the suite holding a thick black binder. Marcus opened it on the glass coffee table, laying out pages of printed bank transfers, forged digital signatures, and high-resolution surveillance photos.

"For eleven months," Graham said, stepping closer to his mother until he towered over her, "you paid Julian Vance sixty thousand dollars a month through an off-shore shell account in the Cayman Islands. His job? Intercept every letter, every package, and every call coming from Maren."

Eleanor’s face paled, but her eyes hardened into steel. "I did what was necessary for your survival! That girl was dragging you down! She wanted a quiet life, a family—she had no ambition! You were born to rule Ashford Meridian, not play house with an orphan!"

"She was carrying my daughter!" Graham roared.

The word echoed in the vast suite like a cannon shot.

Chloe froze, her jaw dropping as she looked between Graham and Eleanor. "A... a daughter?"

Eleanor blinked, for the first time looking genuinely rattled. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Five months ago, Maren gave birth to my baby girl," Graham said, his voice shaking with a mixture of raw grief and venomous fury. "Our baby girl. While I was sitting in glass boardrooms signing deals, my wife was giving birth alone in a municipal hospital. While I was drinking scotch with Julian, my daughter was taking her first breaths without her father."

He stepped closer, leaning down until he was inches from Eleanor’s face.

"You didn't just break my marriage, Mother. You stole my child's first five months of life."

"Graham, listen to me," Eleanor hissed, trying to grasp his arm. "She did it on purpose! She hid the baby to use as leverage—"

"She wrote me nine letters," Graham interrupted, pulling his arm out of her reach. "Nine letters filled with ultrasounds, heartbeats, and updates that you paid Julian to burn."

The lead NYPD detective stepped forward, taking out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Eleanor Ashford, you are under arrest for federal mail interception, wire fraud, and conspiracy."

"Touch me and I will have your badge!" Eleanor snapped, backing away toward the window. "Graham, tell them to stop this instant! The Ashford name cannot survive a scandal like this!"

Graham turned his back on her. "The Ashford name died today in that boardroom."

As the officers snapped the cold metal cuffs around Eleanor’s wrists, Chloe tried to quietly slip past the agents toward the door. Graham didn't even turn his head as he addressed her.

"The merger between Ashford Meridian and Kensington Global is canceled," Graham said coldly. "If your family attempts to retain any shared assets, my legal team will file discovery motions that will drag your father’s offshore tax shelters into federal court."

Chloe stopped dead in her tracks, her face drained of color, before turning and fleeing down the hallway.

Eleanor was led out in handcuffs, screaming at her son in the corridor of the hotel. But Graham just stood in the middle of the ruined suite, looking down at his bloody knuckles.

He didn't feel victorious. He felt completely hollow.

He pulled out his phone and dialed a private driver. "Bring the car around. We’re going to Queens."
