Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Arrow

The press conference room at Ashford Meridian was packed wall-to-wall with over two hundred journalists, camera crews, and financial correspondents. Flashbulbs went off continuously, creating an absolute wall of white noise inside the auditorium.
Outside, a crowd of onlookers had gathered on Fifth Avenue. The Ashford family scandal was the biggest story in the country.
Behind the velvet curtain off-stage, Graham adjusted his cuffs. He was back in his razor-sharp suit, but his posture wasn't that of a corporate predator defending his earnings. He looked like a man preparing to walk into a firing squad to shield his family.
Marcus Vance stepped up beside him. "Eleanor’s legal team just released a statement from her residence while she's out on bail. She claims you’re mentally unstable, compromised by an estranged wife who manipulated you with a secret child to gain control of fifty percent of the company's shares."
Graham didn't flinch. "Let her speak. Every lie she tells now will just add years to her sentence."
"Graham," I spoke up, stepping out from the private side holding room.
I was wearing a simple, tailored navy dress. In my arms, Lily was asleep in her cozy wrap, completely oblivious to the circus waiting beyond the curtain.
Graham turned instantly, stepping over to us. The harsh edge in his face softened completely. "Maren. You didn't have to come here. I told you I would handle this alone."
"We are a family, Graham," I said quietly, looking up into his eyes. "Even if we're broken right now. If Eleanor wants to attack our daughter's legitimacy, I won't hide in Queens while you take the arrows."
Graham’s breath caught. He looked down at Lily, then reached out, gently caressing her cheek with the back of his hand.
"I won't let them touch either of you," he promised.
He turned, pushed back the velvet curtain, and walked out onto the elevated stage alone.
The roar of the press room was instantaneous. Dozens of reporters shouted questions over one another.
"Mr. Ashford! Is it true your mother has been ousted from the board?" "Graham! Are you stepping down as CEO?" "Did your wife hide your child for financial leverage?!"
Graham walked steadily to the podium, placing his hands on the edges. He didn't look at his prepared notes. He simply adjusted the microphone and waited.
His silence was so heavy, so intimidating, that within ten seconds, the shouting faded into an anxious hush.
"For six years," Graham began, his deep voice carrying through the speakers with absolute clarity, "the public has known me as the CEO of Ashford Meridian. A man who calculated every move by profit, loss, and contractual enforcement. I built that reputation because I believed that power was the only way to protect what was mine."
He paused, looking directly into the primary network camera lens.
"I was wrong," Graham declared quietly. "Yesterday, nine unopened letters were placed on a table in my boardroom. Nine letters written by my wife, Maren Ashford, over the course of eleven months. Letters detailing her pregnancy, the birth of our daughter, and every milestone I failed to witness."
A collective gasp echoed through the room. Cameras flashed rapidly.
"Those letters never reached my hands," Graham continued, his tone turning into cold steel. "Because my Chief of Staff and my own mother conspired to intercept them, pay off mail couriers, and erase my wife from my life—all to protect a corporate merger that meant nothing."
In the front row, a senior reporter from The New York Times raised his hand. "Mr. Ashford! Your mother’s representatives claim Mrs. Ashford engineered this reveal to extort fifty percent of your corporate equity!"
Graham leaned into the microphone, his eyes flashing with a terrifying fury.
"My wife didn't extort a single dime," Graham said, his voice echoing in the dead silent hall. "I begged her to take that equity. I transferred fifty percent of my personal wealth into a trust for our daughter because I am a father who failed his family, and I will spend the rest of my life trying to fix it."
He took a step back from the podium, gesturing toward the side stage.
"Maren Ashford is not a ghost. She is not an extortionist. She is the mother of my child, the rightful heart of this family, and the only reason I am standing here today as a human being instead of a corporate monster."
I took a deep breath, clutching Lily tightly against my chest, and stepped out from behind the curtain onto the brightly lit stage.
The wall of flashbulbs exploded. The room burst into a frenzy of shouts and camera shutters.
Graham walked across the stage to meet me. He didn't care about the cameras, the reporters, or the stock market. He stood right beside me, wrapping his arm around my waist, positioning his body between the blinding lights and our sleeping baby.
