Chapter 11 - The Secret Uncovered

Reclaiming our house was a massive victory, but the battle was far from over.
As the weeks passed, Maya’s recovery progressed beautifully. Her incisions healed into faint pink lines, her appetite returned with a vengeance, and she was back to kicking her soccer ball against the garage door until dusk. Her laughter returned to the hallway, bright and loud, ringing through the house like music.
Meanwhile, I began preparing for our final divorce trial. Evelyn Vance had requested full disclosure of all of Robert’s financial assets, but Robert’s legal team kept filing delays, claiming his financial records were “complex” due to investments.
“He’s hiding something, Sarah,” Evelyn told me over lunch one Tuesday afternoon. “A man who freaks out over a three-thousand-dollar medical hold usually has a reason for his paranoia. He’s either broke, or he’s hoarding money somewhere we haven't looked.”
I decided to clean out the home office—a room Robert had kept strictly locked for years. Since the court had awarded me exclusive possession of the home, I had a locksmith cut open the heavy oak desk drawers.
Inside the bottom drawer, hidden behind stacks of old tax returns, I found a black leather binder labeled PROPERTIES & TRUSTS.
My hands trembled as I flipped through the pages.
Robert hadn't just been saving money. For the past six years, he had been diverting small amounts of money from his corporate bonuses into an offshore trust account registered in the Cayman Islands. But even worse was what lay on the final page of the binder.
It was a deed to a luxury lakefront condominium two hours outside the city, purchased three years ago in cash.
And attached to the deed was a second life insurance policy—a two-million-dollar policy taken out on me five years ago, with Robert listed as the sole beneficiary, paid for using funds from the hidden account.
My blood ran cold.
Robert’s obsession with keeping money away from us wasn't just about being cheap. He had been building a completely secret second life while keeping Maya and me on a strict financial leash, monitoring every penny we spent so we would never discover his hidden wealth.
I immediately scanned every single page of the binder and emailed the files straight to Evelyn Vance with a short message:
Look at what I just found.

Ten minutes later, my phone rang.
“Sarah,” Evelyn said, her voice shaking with rare excitement. “You just handed us the keys to his entire kingdom. He didn't just hide assets—he committed perjury on his financial disclosure affidavits. We are going to destroy him in the final settlement.”
