Chapter 13 - A New Beginning

Six months later.

The autumn air was crisp and clear, carpeted with golden oak leaves. The sun shone brightly over the green turf of the high school soccer field.

I sat in the top row of the wooden bleachers, wearing a warm knitted sweater and holding a thermos of hot cocoa. Beside me sat Clara, cheering loudly as the referee blew his whistle to start the second half of the regional varsity match.

Down on the field, wearing the number 12 jersey, was Maya.

She was radiant. Her cheeks were flushed with healthy red, her legs were strong and fast, and she moved across the grass with an effortless grace that filled my heart with overwhelming pride.

She wasn't hiding in oversized hoodies anymore. She wasn't shrinking into walls or lying in a dark bedroom crying in pain. She was vibrant, powerful, and whole.

When the ball broke free near the middle of the field, Maya sprinted forward, stole the ball from an opposing defender, and kicked a beautiful, soaring arc straight into the top right corner of the net.

The crowd erupted into cheers!

GOAL!

Maya turned, looking straight up into the bleachers where Clara and I were standing, and raised both arms in victory, flashing a bright, brilliant smile that outshone the afternoon sun.

After the game, as we walked back to our SUV in the parking lot, Maya wrapped her arm through mine.

“Mom,” she said, resting her head against my shoulder for a brief second. “Thank you.”

“For what, sweetie?”

“For taking me to the hospital that day,” she said softly. “For standing up for me when nobody else would.”

I stopped in the middle of the parking lot, turned to her, and brushed a lock of hair from her eyes. “I would do it a thousand times over, Maya. You saved my life just as much as I saved yours.”
