Chapter 6 - Bloodline and Blackmail

The nursery at the Harrison estate was bathed in warm, muted lamplight. Grace slept soundly in her crib, a tiny bundle of innocence oblivious to the storm raging outside the mansion’s wrought-iron gates.

I stood by the window, watching the Philadelphia rain pool on the terrace, when my private phone chimed. It was an email from an untraceable address, bearing a single attachment titled BROOKS_CONFIDENTIAL_12YRS.pdf.

Seconds later, my phone rang.

I answered without hesitation. “You’re violating your bail conditions by contacting me, Michael.”

Michael’s voice was slick, triumphant, and dripping with venom. “Hang up and check your inbox, Catherine. You think you’re playing the righteous queen reclaiming her throne, but you’re just a pawn on another man’s chessboard.”

I clicked open the file on my tablet. My eyes scanned the yellowed medical records and a settlement agreement from twelve years ago bearing Daniel Brooks’ signature alongside Michael’s.

“Does the name Clara Brooks ring a bell?” Michael purred, savoring every syllable. “Daniel’s little sister died in a clinical trial I managed before I ever laid eyes on you. Daniel didn't show up in your delivery room by fate. He tracked you. He studied your medical file. He used your emergency labor to embed himself into your life so he could use the Harrison wealth and legal power to avenge his dead sister.”

My chest tightened, but I kept my breathing steady. “Is that your masterstroke, Michael? A tragic coincidence from a decade ago?”

“Coincidence?” Michael laughed coldly. “I’m taking this file to every major news outlet by midnight. I’ll make sure the press paints your noble doctor as an obsessive predator who exploited a vulnerable patient. And when I file for full custody of Grace tomorrow, I will prove that you invited an unhinged stalker into our daughter’s home. Settle with me. Sign over forty percent of the biotech stock, drop the federal charges, or I will turn your pristine reputation into ash.”

He hung up.

I turned around to find Dr. Daniel Brooks standing at the nursery door. He had stopped by with Arthur Vance to review the hospital’s internal audit reports. He was holding a leather folio, but his eyes were fixed on the tablet screen in my hands.

He had seen the file name.

The silence between us was thick and agonizing.

“Is it true?” I asked quietly, keeping my voice low so as not to wake Grace. “Clara was your sister?”

Daniel lowered his head. When he looked up, the usual clinical detachment was gone, replaced by a raw, ancient grief that cut straight through me.

“Yes,” Daniel said softly. “Clara was nineteen when she was diagnosed with stage-four lymphoma. Michael was the clinical director. He pushed an unapproved dosage schedule to inflate the trial's success rate for his investors. When Clara went into acute organ failure, Michael altered the medical logs, blamed her body’s resistance, and paid the hospital administration to bury the inquest.”

“Did you target me, Daniel?” I looked directly into his dark eyes, searching for even a flicker of deception.

“No, Catherine,” Daniel answered without flinching. “When Michael married you eleven years ago, I walked away from the clinic because your family’s legal empire made him untouchable. But when he approached me three months ago to falsify the Vance-Cure coagulant trials, I knew he was about to kill more innocent people. That night during the storm, St. Catherine’s trauma center had no other on-call surgeon available. I drove through flooded roads to save whoever was on that table. I didn't know the patient was Michael’s wife until I walked through the double doors.”

He reached inside his coat pocket, pulled out a flash drive, and placed it on the side table beside Grace’s crib.

“That drive contains the original, unedited dosage logs from Clara’s trial,” Daniel said quietly. “Clara’s attending nurse kept a private journal before she passed away. If you believe I used you, hand this over to Michael’s defense team. It will ruin my career, but it will keep your peace. I will step down as auditor tonight.”

He turned to leave.

“Daniel,” I called out.

He stopped at the threshold.

“Michael called to blackmail me,” I said, stepping toward him with absolute clarity. “He thought finding out about Clara would make me turn against you. He forgot that a man who abandons his dying wife and daughter will always measure everyone else by his own cowardice.”

I picked up the flash drive and slipped it into my pocket.

“We aren't burying this,” I said firmly. “We’re taking it to the United States Attorney.”
