Chapter 8 - The Severing

The iron gates of the Harrison estate were wide open when Michael’s car screeched into the circular cobblestone driveway. Heavy sheets of rain washed over the front steps, mirroring the night he had abandoned me in labor.

Michael kicked open the car door, gripping the heavy steel wrench in his right hand. His bespoke suit was soaked in seconds, his tie flapping wildly in the cold wind. Desperation had stripped away every shred of his polished veneer.

He took three strides toward the double mahogany front doors before headlights pierced the darkness behind him.

Four unmarked black SUVs and two Philadelphia police cruisers boxed his sedan in against the stone fountain. Sirens wailed to life, cutting through the thunder. Red and blue strobe lights painted the wet pavement.

“Michael Harrison! Drop the weapon and place your hands on your head!” an FBI tactical commander shouted through a megaphone.

Michael spun around, his chest heaving, water streaming into his wild, bloodshot eyes. He looked up at the second-floor nursery window.

I stood behind the double-paned glass holding Grace in my arms. Beside me, Arthur Vance held a phone to his ear, relaying the live GPS feed that had lured Michael directly into the ambush. Down on the porch stood Dr. Daniel Brooks, flanked by two armed federal marshals.

“Catherine!” Michael screamed above the storm, his voice cracking with unhinged fury. “You set me up! You dragged my name into the dirt! You’re nothing without my vision!”

“Drop the weapon now!” the officers commanded, advancing in a tight semi-circle with sidearms drawn.

Michael stared at the wall of law enforcement, then down at the wrench in his hand. The reality of his absolute ruin finally broke through his psychosis. His fingers went limp. The steel tool clattered against the cobblestones.

Two officers tackled him to the wet ground, forcing his arms behind his back. The sharp click of the steel cuffs rang out beneath the pouring rain.

“Get your hands off me!” Michael spat, his cheek pressed into the gravel. “Do you know who I am? I run Harrison-Vance! I will buy this entire precinct and burn it to the ground!”

Arthur Vance stepped down from the porch, an umbrella held over his head, and looked down at the fallen executive.

“You don't run anything, Michael,” Arthur said coldly, tossing a legal notice onto the wet pavement inches from Michael’s face. “Amber Collins signed a full sworn confession two hours ago. She handed over every encrypted ledger, every unapproved clinical trial memo, and your offshore wire routing codes. The Department of Justice has officially indicted you on sixteen counts of federal wire fraud, embezzlement, securities tampering, and the aggravated manslaughter of Clara Brooks.”

Michael thrashing against the pavement stopped dead. His face drained of what little color remained. “Amber... she wouldn't...”

“She took full immunity to save herself twenty years in a federal penitentiary,” Arthur added smoothly. “You taught her well. You taught her that loyalty is disposable. She simply took your advice.”

As the officers hauled Michael to his feet and shoved him into the back of the cruiser, his eyes locked onto mine at the window one last time.

I didn't offer him hatred. I didn't offer him pity.

I simply turned away and closed the heavy velvet drapes, shutting him out of my life forever.
