Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Clinic

The third trimester of a high-stress pregnancy is an unforgiving physical reality. By Thursday morning, sharp Braxton Hicks contractions were tightening across my abdomen, a physical reminder that my daughter was due in less than four weeks.

Elena drove me to my bi-weekly prenatal appointment at the St. Jude Women’s Health Pavilion. Natalie had assigned a private security detail—a quiet, broad-shouldered retired investigator named Marcus—who followed closely behind in an unmarked black sedan.

"Dr. Hayes is ready for you in exam room three, Mrs. Sterling," the receptionist said with a sympathetic smile. The staff knew me; I had been coming here throughout all three of my pregnancies.

Marcus stationed himself in the waiting room near the entrance while Elena accompanied me inside.

Dr. Hayes, a gentle woman with twenty years of obstetric experience, applied the warm ultrasound gel to my swollen belly. The rhythmic, galloping sound of my daughter’s heartbeat filled the room—strong, rapid, and steady.

"Heart rate is 148, growth percentiles look fantastic," Dr. Hayes said, adjusting the transducer. "She’s head down and getting ready. But your blood pressure is creeping up, Mara. You need absolute rest. No stress, no long walks, no emotional turmoil."

"I'm managing it," I said, watching the gray-and-white screen as my baby kicked her tiny foot against the monitor.

"I mean it," Dr. Hayes said softly, wiping the gel from my stomach. "Preeclampsia is always a risk when stress spikes in the final month. If your pressure spikes higher, we will have to induce you early."

As I stepped out of the examination room into the hallway, my phone buzzed with an urgent notification from Marcus in the waiting area.

‘Do not come to the front lobby. Someone is here.’

I signaled to Elena, and we stepped into a private consultation nook. Marcus appeared moments later through the staff corridor.

"Tessa Vaughn is in the main reception," Marcus said in a low, level tone. "She tried to access your appointment records at the front desk claiming to be Grant Sterling’s personal representative authorized to review medical billing."

A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins. "She came here?"

"The staff immediately denied her access and asked her to leave," Marcus explained. "She’s currently lingering in the parking lot by your vehicle. Grant is likely paying her to gather any medical vulnerability we have to claim you're unfit or unstable for the upcoming custody hearing."

"She’s pushing her luck," Elena muttered angrily.

"She’s desperate," I corrected, feeling my resolve harden. "Grant’s bank accounts are frozen, and Tessa realizes the luxury lifestyle she was promised is turning into a legal nightmare. She wants leverage."

Marcus unclipped a discreet radio from his belt. "I can have the building security trespass her right now."

"No," I said, a calculated plan forming in my mind. "Let security escort her off the property officially so we have a formal police trespass warning on record. And Marcus—photograph everything from the upper window. Every single frame."

Ten minutes later, from the third-floor window of the clinic, I watched through the blinds.

Tessa was standing near the medical pavilion exit, wearing an oversized pair of designer sunglasses and pacing agitatedly beside a sleek white sports car. When two building security officers and an on-duty municipal officer approached her, asking for her identification and issuing a formal criminal trespass directive, her arrogance melted into visible panic.

She gestured frantically toward the building, but the officer firmly handed her the yellow citation paper and escorted her back to her vehicle.

Every move they made to corner me was becoming another nail in their legal coffin.

I rested my palm against my belly, feeling the gentle, rhythmic flutter of life inside me. Grant and Tessa believed that fear would make me retreat. They didn't understand that a mother fighting for her children’s future is the most dangerous adversary on earth.
