Chapter 9 - The Deposition of Grant Sterling

Six weeks later, the final formal deposition took place in the grand conference room of the downtown judicial annex.

I arrived wearing a cream bespoke blazer, dark trousers, and low heels. Clara was safe at home with Elena, sleeping soundly between nursing intervals, while Owen and Lily were happily enrolled in an elite private academy funded by my independent trust.

Across the long conference table sat Grant, accompanied by Julian Vance. Vance looked exhausted, the look of a high-priced attorney who knew his client was legally and financially dead in the water. Grant sat with his shoulders slumped, wearing a cheap off-the-rack suit—his designer wardrobe and luxury vehicles having been seized as collateral against the embezzled funds.

A certified court stenographer sat at the end of the table, her fingers poised over the keys.

"We are on the record," Natalie announced smoothly, pressing record on our primary audio device. "In the matter of Sterling v. Sterling, deposition of Grant Sterling regarding marital asset dissipation, corporate fraud, and child custody arrangements."

Julian Vance cleared his throat, leaning forward. "My client is prepared to enter a formal stipulated agreement to avoid further criminal exposure and trial litigation."

Natalie didn't blink. "State the terms for the record, Mr. Vance."

Vance glanced at Grant, whose jaw clenched in bitter defeat.

"Grant Sterling agrees to full, sole legal and physical custody of the minor children—Owen, Lily, and Clara Sterling—awarded entirely to Mara Sterling," Vance recited in a flat monotone. "Mr. Sterling waives all rights to unsupervised visitation. Supervised therapeutic visits may be requested only after twenty-four months of documented court-approved psychological counseling and full restitution compliance."

Grant flinched at the words, but he remained silent.

"Continue," Natalie said.

"Regarding the marital estate," Vance continued, "Grant Sterling surrenders all equitable claims to the primary residence, all real estate holdings in Aspen and Miami, and assigns all remaining shares of Sterling Logistics to the Sterling Family Trust under Mara Sterling’s sole trusteeship. In addition, Mr. Sterling acknowledges full civil liability for the twelve point four million dollars diverted to Green Horizon Ventures and accepts the federal restitution schedule."

Natalie looked at me. "Mara, do you accept these stipulations as a full and final settlement of all civil claims?"

I looked directly across the table into Grant’s hollow eyes.

For years, this man had towered over me. He had used his wealth like a cage, his voice like a whip, and his cruelty like an invisible chain. He had brought his mistress into our home, looked into the eyes of our terrified children, and believed that power belonged to whoever had the loudest voice and the most money.

"I accept," I said clearly.

Grant looked up, his voice barely a rasp. "You took everything from me, Mara. My company. My home. My kids. My name."

I signed the blue-ink signature line on the settlement decree, capped my gold fountain pen, and looked him straight in the eye.

"You gave it all away, Grant," I said softly. "The day you decided cruelty was strength."

I stood up, slid the paperwork toward Natalie, and walked out of the conference room without looking back.
