Part 2: The Mask Shatters

Silence hung heavy in the sprawling penthouse conference room overlooking downtown Charlotte. The low hum of the air conditioning only magnified the suffocating atmosphere. The smug, permanent grin on Ryan Carter’s face instantly froze. His eyes widened, staring intently at the elderly attorney—Mr. Arthur Vance, the supreme legal counsel for the Carter family conglomerate—and then at the sleek black leather folder embossed with a subtle family crest that I held tightly against my chest.

Beside him, Ashley Brooks—the mistress masking as a "business consultant"—shifted uncomfortably in her luxurious leather chair. Her delicate face, meticulously made up to project the innocent, long-suffering aura of a pregnant woman, suddenly flushed with sheer panic. She clutched Ryan’s arm, seeking reassurance, but Ryan himself was spinning into a state of absolute panic.

"Megan... what is the meaning of this?" Ryan tried to keep his voice steady, but the tremor in his tone betrayed him. He snapped a sharp glare toward Mr. Arthur and the two middle-aged men sitting at the corner of the table—the exact individuals I had specifically requested to be present: the Board Representative and the Chief Financial Auditor. "This is a private divorce settlement. Why is the corporate board here? And what on earth is inside that ridiculous folder?"

I didn't rush to answer. I looked down at Noah, my little angel, who was still fast asleep against my chest. His presence was the antidote to all the exhaustion and pain I had endured over the past twelve days. When I finally raised my eyes, I was no longer the submissive, weeping wife begging him to pick up his phone in the delivery room. I was Megan Carter—co-founder, holder of 45% of the actual shares of the Carter Group, and the woman he had fatally underestimated.

"Did you really think I came here to beg for a second chance, Ryan?" I let out a cold, razor-sharp laugh. "Did you think a woman who just walked out of a delivery room alone, with no husband by her side, would be so broken that she’d sign whatever papers you shoved in her face just to get a few dollars of pity alimony?"

"Megan, don't make a scene here!" Ryan growled, attempting to suppress me with his usual domineering attitude. "I know you're hurting. What happened between me and Ashley... it was an accident. But we already agreed. Sign the papers, and you’ll get the suburban estate and a monthly allowance big enough to raise the kid. Keep business out of this. Don't humiliate both of us."

"An accident?" I raised an eyebrow, turning my gaze to Ashley. She quickly avoided my eyes, her hand instinctively shielding her pregnant belly. "An accident that has been going on for the past eight months, starting right when I became pregnant with Noah? An accident that drained over two million dollars from the company’s venture capital fund to buy a luxury penthouse on the city’s most expensive avenue under the name of Ashley Brooks? An accident where you used 'entertainment expenses' to pay for first-class flights to the Maldives and romantic dinners at Michelin-starred restaurants while I had to drive myself to the hospital for routine check-ups?"

The room instantly erupted into whispers. The Chief Auditor, Mr. Thomas, immediately put on his glasses and flipped open a spreadsheet of financial data in front of him. Ryan’s face turned from pale to a furious, humiliated red.

"You... you're slandering me! I never did any of that!" Ryan slammed his hand on the table and stood up abruptly, pointing a finger at my face. "That was my own money! I am the CEO of the Carter Group, I have the right to spend it!"

"You are the CEO, yes," I calmly unlocked the black leather folder. The sharp click of the metal lock cut through the tense air. I pulled out the first file—a thick stack of certified bank statements and invoices stamped as confidential. "But you forgot one thing, Ryan. The Carter Group is not your personal property. It was founded on my family's capital and our joint efforts. Every single dollar you used to spoil your mistress was covertly funneled through a shell company called 'Phoenix Consulting'—a company where Ashley Brooks is listed as the sole legal representative."

I slid the documents toward the Chief Auditor and the Board Representative.

"Here is the complete trail of evidence proving Ryan Carter has committed corporate embezzlement, abuse of trust to misappropriate shareholder assets, and deliberate violation of economic management regulations. The total financial loss amounts to over 4.7 million dollars within the past year alone."

"That's impossible..." Ashley gasped, her voice trembling. She turned to Ryan, her eyes filled with terror. "Ryan, you told me everything was legal! You said this was your performance bonus!"

Ryan didn't answer her. He stared at the papers on the table, his hands shaking violently. The numbers, electronic signatures, and bank transaction trails were blindingly clear. He knew he had fallen into a trap. His perfect plan to force me into a penniless divorce and throw me out of his life to welcome his mistress had completely blown up in his face.

"Twelve days ago," I continued, my voice steady but carrying the weight of a thousand mountains, "while I was in agonizing pain on a hospital bed, begging you to come and see your newborn son, where were you, Ryan? You were at the five-star Ritz-Carlton, celebrating Ashley's third month of pregnancy. The person who sent me that photo was none other than the private investigator I hired six months ago."

I looked straight into his eyes, savoring the utter collapse of a man who once thought himself a king.

"I gave you the chance to confess to the board and divorce in peace. But you chose to bring her here, using her unborn child to humiliate me and Noah. You thought I was weak? You thought motherhood made me blind? No, Ryan. It made me stronger than ever. From this moment on, you aren't just losing a wife. You are going to lose everything you ever took pride in."

Attorney Arthur Vance stepped forward, placing another set of documents in front of Ryan. His expression was completely stone-cold.

"Mr. Carter, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Carter Group, I officially notify you: Your position as CEO is suspended effective immediately to facilitate an internal investigation. Furthermore, Mrs. Megan Carter has filed criminal charges against you for corporate embezzlement. If you do not cooperate and sign the divorce settlement under the terms provided by Mrs. Megan, this case will be handed directly to the Economic Crimes Investigation Department at 4:00 PM today."

Ryan stood frozen to the spot. His mask of confidence and arrogance shattered into pieces, leaving a pathetic, helpless man before the very woman he thought he could easily trample.
