Part 3: The Courtroom Battle and the Double Betrayal

The meeting at the Charlotte high-rise was merely the opening shot of an ensuing nightmare for Ryan Carter. He had no idea that my black folder contained far more than just financial evidence. It was a Pandora’s box holding the filthiest secrets of his and Ashley Brooks' lives.

After being ousted from his position, Ryan desperately tried to salvage the situation. He called me hundreds of times, sent begging text messages, and even showed up at my apartment doorstep on his knees, but I shut him out completely. All communications had to go through lawyers. When he realized he couldn't sway me, his malicious and petty nature resurfaced. He decided to play his final card, hiring a team of the most ruthless attorneys with one objective: to gain custody of baby Noah so he could use the child as a bargaining chip to drain my assets, while publicly defaming my character to mitigate his own crimes.

Three months later, the divorce and child custody trial officially commenced at the Mecklenburg County Family Court.

Ryan showed up looking haggard but with eyes full of deep resentment. Sitting beside him was still Ashley Brooks, whose pregnant belly was now highly prominent. They deliberately tried to paint the picture of an aggrieved couple, oppressed by a powerful and wealthy ex-wife using her money to crush them. In front of the media, Ryan’s lawyer argued that I was an unfit mother suffering from psychological instability.

"Your Honor," Ryan’s attorney stated loudly and clearly, "my client, Mr. Ryan Carter, admits to making mistakes in his marriage. However, Mrs. Megan Carter shows severe signs of postpartum depression. She hired private investigators to track her husband for months, displays an obsessive-compulsive fixation on corporate finance, and has consistently neglected her child to focus on corporate revenge. An unstable mother consumed by hatred cannot provide a healthy development environment for a three-month-old infant. Conversely, my client and Miss Ashley are preparing to welcome a new life, and they possess the full warmth of a family to nurture the child."

I sat on the opposite bench, cradling Noah in my arms. My son was sturdier now, his bright dark eyes looking around, completely oblivious to the storm raging around him. I gently patted him, my face as calm as still water. Ryan’s shamelessness no longer hurt me; it only disgusted me.

"Mrs. Carter, do you have any response to the plaintiff's allegations?" The judge looked down at me with a stern but empathetic gaze.

I stood up, handed Noah to my trusted nanny sitting behind me, and walked up to the witness stand. I looked directly at Ryan, then slowly shifted my gaze to Ashley. A flash of pity crossed my eyes as I looked at the woman who was about to become a mother.

"Your Honor," I spoke, my voice clear and resonating throughout the courtroom. "I am not depressed. I am simply awake. Awake enough to protect my son from an immoral father and an environment built on lies. The plaintiff claims they have a 'warm family' to welcome Noah? Then please allow me to present to the Court the supplementary documents located in Section 3 of the black folder."

My lawyer immediately brought the documents up to the Judge and handed a copy to Ryan’s team.

The moment Ryan opened the file, he froze instantly. They were DNA test reports, accompanied by a series of anonymous messages from a hidden iCloud account.

"What is this?" Ryan muttered, his face draining of color as he turned to stare at Ashley.

"Your Honor," I continued, "those are the results of a non-invasive prenatal paternity test for Miss Ashley Brooks, performed at an international private clinic two months ago. The person who requested the test was not Mr. Ryan, but another man—Mr. Julian Reynolds, the former strategic partner of the Carter Group whom Ryan fired last year."

The entire courtroom gasped. Ashley Brooks looked as white as a sheet. She bolted up, trying to snatch the document out of Ryan’s hands, but he shoved her away violently.

"The DNA results confirm with 99.9% certainty that the child in Miss Ashley Brooks' womb does not belong to Ryan Carter, but to Julian Reynolds," I said calmly, each word acting like a dagger stabbing into the final shreds of Ryan’s pride. "Miss Ashley used this pregnancy to force Ryan to divorce me so she could legitimately marry into wealth. Simultaneously, she secretly accepted a 500,000-dollar payment from Julian Reynolds to act as a corporate spy, leaking the Carter Group's confidential trade secrets to our primary competitor. The entire chat logs and transfer history between her and Julian are right there in that folder."

"Ashley... You... You lied to me?!" Ryan roared like a wounded beast right in the middle of the courtroom. He grabbed Ashley by her shoulders, shaking her violently. "I left my wife! I abandoned my son! I ruined my entire career for you! I transferred millions into your account! This child... this child isn't mine?!"

"Ryan, let me explain... It’s not what it looks like! Those documents are fake! Megan is framing us!" Ashley wept hysterically, trying to cling to his suit jacket, but the panic and guilt in her eyes laid bare the absolute truth.

"Order! Order in the court!" The judge’s gavel slammed down heavily.

The chaotic scene playing out before me looked like a cheap comedy. The man who once stood at the top, mocking the sanctity of marriage and disregarding his own flesh and blood, was now being bitterly betrayed by the very mistress he had worshiped. Karma had arrived swifter and more ruthless than anyone could have ever imagined.
