Chapter 2 - The Audit of the FeedDavid Vance froze, his pen hovering two inches above his legal pad.

"An encrypted secondary cloud server?" David whispered, his tired eyes suddenly flashing with intense, sharp professional interest. "Are you telling me the entire interaction was recorded?"
"Every second," I replied. "From the moment Brooklyn walked into the kitchen and grabbed my grandmother’s pearl bracelet, to the moment Callan slapped me, to the exact physical angle of the oil pan falling."
I pulled my fingers through my hair, remembering the small red light blinking from the decorative spice rack near the dining room entrance—a unit Melissa had demanded my father install so she could monitor the catering staff during her high-society dinner parties.
"David," I instructed, "my phone is sitting inside Evidence Bag #402 in the precinct property room. The secondary access application is hidden inside a secondary calculator utility folder. The password is my grandmother's maiden name."
David didn't waste another second. He stood up from his chair, snapped his legal pad shut, and marched straight out of the holding room toward the precinct evidence locker.
Twenty minutes later, the heavy door clicked open once again.
David walked back into the room, but his tired, defeated posture was completely gone. His face was flushed, his eyes wide with a combination of professional shock and righteous fury. He carried a small portable tablet connected to a high-speed data cord.
"My God, Anastasia," David breathed, setting the tablet flat on the stainless-steel table.
He tapped the screen.
The high-definition 4K video stream lit up the dark holding room with crystal-clear audio:
The footage displayed the Paradise Valley dining room twenty-four hours earlier.
It clearly showed Brooklyn stepping directly into my path, deliberately driving her shoulder into my ribs, and knocking the soup bowl onto the carpet. It captured Melissa smiling behind her wine glass as she called me "careless and disrespectful."
And then came the moment that made David’s jaw drop open.
The video displayed Callan stepping forward, his face contorted in arrogant, aristocratic rage, screaming at me to apologize before swinging his right palm across my face with enough force to snap my head sideways.
The audio played with terrifying, uncompressed crispness:
“I said apologize!” Callan’s recorded voice roared through the tablet speaker, followed by the sharp, concussive CRACK of his hand making impact with my cheek.
The video then showed the immediate aftermath: as Callan stepped forward to grab my throat, his sleeve caught the handle of the oil pan sitting on the stove ledge, tipping the hot oil across his own arm and chest as I stumbled backward onto the floor.
I hadn't thrown the oil. Callan had pulled it onto himself while reaching out to strike me a second time.

"This isn't domestic assault, Anastasia," David declared, his voice trembling with razor-sharp authority.
"This is felony perjury, witness tampering, and unlawful assault committed by the Harrington family."
