Chapter 3 - Blood on the Vinyl

Derek’s fingers twitched against Cole’s thigh. It was a faint, frantic flutter—a desperate white flag from a man whose airway was closing and whose neck felt like dry kindling on the verge of snapping.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Cole didn't let go immediately.

He held the lock for precisely four seconds—the exact four seconds Derek had stolen from me while I choked into blackness. He didn't crank it harder; he simply held the threshold, letting Derek marinate in the absolute helplessness of knowing someone else held total control over his consciousness.

Derek’s eyes rolled back slightly, his lips turning a pale, sickly blue, before Cole smoothly unthreaded his arms and stepped backward, leaving Derek to collapse into a heap on the mat.

Derek lay face down, choking on his own saliva, his chest heaving violently against the grey vinyl. He sounded like a dying engine, dry-heaving and clawing at his throat, dragging in ragged, agonized breaths.

"That was four seconds," Cole said calmly, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. "Just like you gave her."

A heavy silence lingered over the room. The senior belts—men who had routinely laughed at Derek’s cruel jokes and turned a blind eye when he choked out teenagers and beginners—stood glued to their spots. None of them stepped forward. None of them offered a hand to the man lying on the floor.

Suddenly, the heavy glass door of the private office at the back of the gym swung open with a bang.

Marcus Vance stepped out.

Marcus was the founder of Apex Grappling, a former regional MMA fighter whose career had ended with torn knee ligaments and an inflated ego. He had built Apex into the premier gym in the city through aggressive marketing, municipal contracts, and an unspoken alliance with local enforcers. He wore a crisp, branded black gi with gold embroidery, and his face was twisted in fury.

"What the hell is going on here?" Marcus barked, his eyes darting from Derek on the floor to Cole standing motionless in the center of the mat.

"Marcus..." Derek croaked, struggling up onto one elbow, blood dripping from his split lower lip where he’d bitten it on the takedown. "This guy... he jumped me. He's not even registered in the class."

Marcus’s gaze snapped to Cole. "Who the hell are you?"

Cole didn't answer. He walked over to where I was still sitting against the cinderblocks. He knelt down beside me, his demeanor softening instantly, and placed a warm hand on my shoulder.

"You okay, Sarah?" he asked softly.

"I'm okay," I whispered, my voice raw and rasping. "Cole... we should go."

"Yeah," Cole nodded gently. "We're done here."

"You're not going anywhere!" Marcus shouted, stepping onto the mat with his boots still on—a direct violation of the gym's most sacred rule. He pointed a thick, manicured finger at Cole’s face. "You walk into my facility, assault my top instructor, and think you can just walk out? I have cameras running in every corner of this room. You just committed felony aggravated battery."

Cole stood up slowly. He turned to face Marcus, towering slightly over the gym owner despite wearing nothing but an unbranded rash guard.

"Assault?" Cole said evenly. "Your instructor asked who was next. I stepped onto the mat. We rolled under the running round timer. Your students watched the entire exchange."

Marcus looked around the room, expecting his senior students to chime in with outrage.

"Tyler! Leo!" Marcus snapped at two purple belts standing near the heavy bags. "Tell him. He attacked Derek, right?"

Tyler swallowed hard, looking down at his toes. Leo nervously adjusted his belt and cleared his throat. Neither of them said a word. They had watched Derek brutalize twenty-six-year-old Sarah minutes earlier, and they had just watched this stranger humiliate their gym’s resident bully in less than two minutes. The spell of Derek’s intimidation was broken.

"Listen to me, tough guy," Marcus lowered his voice, stepping closer until he was inches from Cole’s chest. "I don't care what sandpit you crawled out of. I know the chief of police. I know the city council members who sponsor our youth programs. You touch anyone in this gym again, and I’ll make sure you spend the next five years in a state penitentiary."

Cole didn't blink. He looked down into Marcus’s eyes with a chilling, detached focus that made Marcus imperceptibly lean his shoulders back.

"Check your cameras, Marcus," Cole said calmly. "And while you’re reviewing the tape, watch what your instructor did to my sister after she tapped three times. If you want to call the police, please do. I would love for the district attorney to see what kind of gym you're running here."

Marcus’s jaw twitched. He knew the law. A student tapping out creates an explicit legal revocation of consent. Continuing a chokehold beyond that point isn't training; it's assault with a deadly weapon.

"Get your sister," Marcus spat, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Get your gear. And get the hell out of my gym. You're banned for life. Both of you."

"With pleasure," Cole said.

He helped me to my feet, slinging my gym bag over his shoulder. I leaned against him, my legs still trembling from the lack of oxygen, and we walked toward the exit.

May you like

As we pushed through the glass doors into the cool evening air, I looked back through the tinted window. Derek was finally on his feet, holding an ice pack to his neck, his eyes burning into Cole’s back with a promise of retribution.

This wasn't over. I could feel it in the cold pit of my stomach. Derek wasn't the kind of man who accepted defeat; he was the kind who burned the building down to prove he hadn't lost.
