Chapter 7 - The Viral Clip

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the situation took a catastrophic turn that none of us anticipated.

I woke up to seventy-four unread messages and forty missed calls on my phone. My stomach plummeted. I unlocked the screen, hands shaking, and opened Instagram.

A three-minute video was circulating across every local sports page, combat sports forum, and community Facebook group with the caption:

"Apex Grappling Black Belt Gets Humiliated by Random Guy After Choking a Girl Unconscious."

My heart stopped.

Someone—likely one of the junior students standing near the back wall—had filmed the entire interaction on their phone. The video began with me lying limp and blue on the mat, Derek laughing and adjusting his belt, and then captured Cole stepping forward from the cinderblock wall.

The audio was horrifyingly clear:

“She tapped. You held it four more seconds. You put her out on purpose.”

The camera captured Derek’s smug laugh, his aggressive lunge, and then Cole’s effortless, devastating counter. The video showed Derek being launched into the air, crashing down, and then whimpering beneath Cole’s heel before begging for release in the neck crank.

It already had 420,000 views.

The comment section was an inferno:

"Who is this dude in the plain rash guard?! That was pure military CQB!" "That black belt got exposed hard. Total gym bully got served." "Isn't that Apex Grappling? Their head coach Marcus is a known scumbag." "The way he held him for exactly four seconds... pure justice."

I stumbled into the living room, thrusting the phone toward Cole, who was calmly drinking his morning coffee at the kitchen counter.

"Cole, look at this!" I cried. "It’s everywhere! Over four hundred thousand people have seen it!"

Cole took the phone, watched the footage without changing his expression, and handed it back. "I knew someone was recording. The red light on the cubby shelf was reflecting in the mirror."

"If you knew, why didn't you stop them?"

"Because shame is the only weapon that penetrates narcissism," Cole said calmly. "Marcus and Derek rely on their reputation to recruit new students and intimidate the community. Without their aura of dominance, they have nothing."

Suddenly, my phone rang again. It was my boss, Karen, the senior partner at my architectural design firm.

I answered with a dry throat. "Karen?"

"Sarah, what on earth is going on?" Karen’s voice was tense, stripped of its usual warmth. "I just received three emails from Marcus Vance at Apex Development Group threatening to pull their commercial interior contract from our firm if we don't immediately terminate your employment."

My vision swam. Apex Development Group was one of Marcus’s shell companies—and they had just signed a $120,000 contract with our firm two weeks ago to design their new secondary training facility.

"Karen, please, let me explain—"

"He claims you and an unregistered felon assaulted his staff and fabricated a viral smear video to extort him!" Karen cut me off. "Sarah, this is a massive account. Our firm cannot be dragged into a violent public scandal. I need you to take unpaid administrative leave starting right now until this is resolved legally."

"Administrative leave?" Tears of humiliation burned behind my eyelids. "Karen, he choked me unconscious! It's on the video!"

"I don't care about the video, Sarah! I care about the liability!" Karen snapped, and the line clicked dead.

I sank onto the kitchen floor, burying my head in my knees. The tears came fast and bitter, burning my throat.

"They're taking everything," I sobbed. "My job. My peace. Everything."

Cole knelt beside me. He didn't offer empty platitudes. He didn't tell me it was going to be fine. He simply placed his heavy, protective hand on my head.

"Marcus just made this a war of attrition," Cole said, his voice dropping into that chilling, icy register. "He thinks he can use money to starve you out."

Cole stood up, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number.

"Frank," Cole said into the receiver. "Initiate phase two. Pull every tax filing, municipal permit, and insurance bond for Apex Development and Apex Grappling. We're shutting them down."
