PART 6: Undercurrents and the Hidden Truth

A year flew by quickly since peace had returned to the Hale estate. However, the life of a renowned doctor and a wealthy family is rarely a permanently still lake. Vivian’s absence inadvertently dragged in new legal troubles from her side of the family, and an old secret began to stir back to life.

1. An Uninvited Guest from the Past

On a crisp autumn afternoon, a luxury car pulled up squarely in front of the Hale mansion gates. Stepping out of the vehicle was Richard Vance—Vivian’s biological brother, and a notoriously sharp, cold-blooded attorney in high society. He brought with him a court summons.

Arthur received Richard in his study, the very room where he had almost lost his life. The air in the room was thick with tension.

"Arthur, I didn't come here to apologize for my foolish sister," Richard threw a stack of documents onto the desk, a cold smirk playing on his lips. "I came to claim custody of the two boys. The Vance family cannot allow our bloodline to be raised by a man who threw their mother into prison."

Arthur didn't flinch. He calmly took a sip of his tea, his razor-sharp gaze locking onto his opponent:

  • "Richard, are you joking?" Arthur lowered his voice. "Your sister intentionally poisoned me. All the evidence was recognized by the Supreme Court. Her parental rights have been stripped permanently."

  • "Yes, Vivian is guilty. But Ethan and Caleb are entitled to inherit one-third of the Vance Group's assets when they turn 18. We have a right to protect that interest," Richard laid his cards on the table, revealing his true ambition aimed at the massive fortune. "If you don't cooperate, we will reopen the case and accuse you of using violence and framing Vivian that night."

2. The Unity of a New Family

The new legal battle erupted quietly but brutally. The Vance family used their media influence to smear Arthur’s reputation, painting him as a cold-blooded husband who drove his wife to the edge.

Under the pressure of public opinion, Arthur began to have sleepless nights. But this time, he was no longer alone.

Late one evening, while Arthur was still buried under a mountain of defense files, Maya walked in carrying a warm bowl of chicken soup. Seeing the faint streaks of silver hair starting to appear at his temples, her heart tightened.

"Mr. Arthur, you need to rest. If you collapse, who will Ethan and Caleb lean on?" Maya said softly.

"I'm fine, Maya. I just... don't want the boys to have to go to court again. I'm afraid they'll be traumatized," Arthur sighed, rubbing his temples.

Maya stepped closer, her eyes shining with an unprecedented determination:

"I was once framed by Vivian, and it was you and the young masters who demanded justice for me. This time, please let me testify. I will stand before the court and tell everyone how poorly Vivian treated the children, and how deeply you love them. We have done nothing wrong, Mr. Arthur."

The word "We" coming from Maya's mouth made Arthur freeze. He looked at the resilient woman in front of him—the one who had walked across the boundary of life and death with him—and realized that the bond between them had now transcended the line of employer and housekeeper.

3. The Fatal Counterattack

With the help of attorney Marcus and Maya’s brave testimony, Arthur chose not to play defense. He went on the offensive.

Marcus had quietly investigated and uncovered a shocking truth: Richard Vance was the mastermind who had financed Julian Vance (Vivian's lover) to procure that rare toxin. Richard wanted to use Vivian's hands to eliminate Arthur, then manipulate his sister to swallow the entire Hale estate.

At a closed court hearing three weeks later, while Richard was confidently presenting his aggressive arguments, Arthur nonchalantly pushed a voice recorder and a stack of confidential bank statements toward the judge.

"Your Honor, this is evidence showing that Mr. Richard Vance was directly involved in my attempted murder a year ago. He is morally unfit to raise my children. His rightful place... is in the cell right next to his sister," Arthur declared loudly and clearly.

The color instantly drained from Richard's face. He slammed his hands on the table and stood up, but two security officers quickly closed in on him. The Vance family's game of thrones had completely collapsed.

4. Sunshine After the Last Rain

As they walked out of the courthouse gates, reporters swarmed Arthur. But this time, he didn't hide. He tightly held the hands of Ethan and Caleb, while Maya walked right beside them, shielding the children from the flashing camera lenses.

When they returned home, the mansion was restored to its natural tranquility.

That evening, Ethan led Caleb by the hand over to Arthur and Maya. The older boy looked at his father, then at Maya, and said softly: "Daddy, Ms. Maya has protected us so much. Can... can I call Ms. Maya 'Mommy'?"

Both Arthur and Maya were stunned. Maya was so moved that she burst into tears, kneeling down to pull both children into her arms. Arthur stepped forward, wrapping his large hand around the three of them.

"If Ms. Maya agrees, then I am completely happy, Ethan," Arthur smiled, his eyes full of tenderness as he looked at Maya.

The final storm had passed. The Hale estate was no longer just the cold name of an aristocratic family; it had truly become a sanctuary wrapped in love, sacrifice, and genuine happiness.
