PART 7 : The Vow Beneath the Oak Tree

Two years after the storms surrounding the Vance family had completely settled, the Hale estate had truly transformed. Laughter was no longer a luxury. Maya had officially become Mrs. Hale, yet she retained the same gentleness and devotion she had shown since the very beginning.
However, life always presents new challenges as children grow.
1. The Stepmother’s Challenge
Ethan had entered his twelfth year, an age marked by complex emotional and psychological shifts. Although he had been the first to suggest calling Maya "Mommy," facing the whispers from his classmates at the elite private school about his "stepmother who used to be a maid" made him grow sullen and withdrawn.
One afternoon, Arthur received a call from the headmaster. Ethan had gotten into a fistfight with a classmate.
In his study, Arthur looked at the bruise near his son’s eye, keeping his voice strictly controlled.
"Ethan, explain this to me. Why did you resort to your fists to solve a problem?"
Ethan kept his head low, his hands balled into tight fists, maintaining absolute silence.
The door swung open, and Maya rushed in. Seeing Ethan’s injury, she didn’t utter a single word of reproach. Instead, she immediately knelt beside him, gently dabbing an antiseptic cotton ball onto the cut.
"That hurts, doesn't it, sweetheart? Don't move, let Mommy clean it up for you."
Ethan suddenly flinched away from her hand and shouted: "Stop hovering over me! Why did you have to be a maid anyway? Everyone at school laughs at me and Caleb! They say you only married Daddy for the Hale family money!"
The air in the room instantly froze. Arthur moved to stand up to discipline his son, but Maya raised a hand slightly to stop him. A flash of sorrow crossed her eyes, but it was instantly replaced by boundless maternal grace.
2. The Power of Sincerity
"Ethan, look at me," Maya said softly, her voice trembling but incredibly warm. "Your friends are partly right. I was a housekeeper; that is a fact, and I am never ashamed of it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with honest labor to make a living."
She placed a hand over her heart.
"But there is one thing your friends are wrong about. I didn't stay in this house for your father's money. Years ago, when I was framed and the whole world turned its back on me, you—a ten-year-old boy—bravely stood up to protect me. I stayed here for you, for Caleb, and for the love you gave me. I might not have a noble background, but I would readily give my life to protect you and your brother."
Ethan looked up, meeting Maya's tear-filled yet fiercely resolute eyes. The memory of that rainy night two years ago, when Maya had shielded him and his brother from Julian’s gun, came rushing back. The rebellion of adolescence was instantly washed away by a mother's fierce devotion.
The boy burst into tears, throwing himself into Maya's arms. "I'm sorry, Mommy... I was wrong. I'm not ashamed of you... I was just so angry that they were lying about you..."
Arthur stepped forward, wrapping his arms around both of them. He knew that Maya had used her raw sincerity and profound grace to pass the ultimate test of being a stepmother.
3. The Ceremony Under the Century-Old Oak
To shatter the malicious gossip of high society once and for all and firmly establish Maya’s rightful position, Arthur decided to host a grand wedding anniversary celebration right on the estate grounds, beneath their historic, century-old oak tree.
The gala was an elegant affair, attended by the city’s most prominent families and members of the press. Maya appeared in a simple yet stunning white silk gown, radiating natural elegance and poise.
When Arthur took the stage, he held Maya's hand firmly and spoke into the microphone with absolute conviction:
"Many people standing here tonight have questioned my choice. But today, I want to declare to the entire world: Maya is not just my wife; she is the savior of the Hale family, the one who rescued our souls from total darkness. Without her resilience and love, my sons would not have grown up healthy and whole. My greatest asset is not the Hale Group—it is the woman standing right beside me."
Below the stage, Ethan and Caleb stood dressed in matching, dapper miniature tuxedos. Ethan took the initiative to step up, holding a small box. He opened it and pulled out a silver bracelet that the two brothers had handcrafted in their art class.
"Mommy Maya, this is a gift from us. We love you," Ethan and Caleb said in unison.
Thundering applause erupted across the gardens, completely drowning out any lingering whispers of cynicism or disdain.
4. True Peace
Late that night, after the guests had departed, the lights in the mansion were dimmed. Arthur and Maya stood on the balcony, looking down at the moonlit gardens.
"You did so much for me tonight, Arthur," Maya whispered, leaning her head against her husband's shoulder.
May you like
"No, Maya. You are the one who brought spring back to our lives," Arthur replied, wrapping his arms around her waist and pressing a gentle kiss into her hair.
Inside the living room, Ethan was patiently guiding Caleb through placing the final pieces of a massive toy castle. The shadows of the past and the bitterness of betrayal had completely evaporated. Under this roof, love had conquered all, writing a beautiful, lasting new chapter for the Hale family.
