Part 3: The Family Ledger

The fallout from the Thanksgiving weekend dismantled the structure of the family within forty-eight hours. Alejandro refused to let his mother or sister enter our apartment building, hiring a private security guard to ensure our privacy while I remained on strict bed rest. But Doña Victoria was a matriarch built on family loyalty, and she wasn't going to let a "domestic dispute" destroy her family's public standing.
On Wednesday afternoon, Doña Victoria bypassed the security desk by using an old key Alejandro had forgotten to revoke. She walked into our living room, her face set in a hard, aristocratic mask of determination.
"Alejandro is at the office, Mother," I said, sitting up on the sofa, resting a protective hand over my stomach. "You shouldn't be here."
"Elena, we need to put an end to this madness," Doña Victoria said, sitting down opposite me without an invitation. She pulled a thick envelope from her designer purse and laid it flat on the coffee table. "This is a deed to a property in Miami, fully funded, along with a certified check for fifty thousand dollars. I want you and Alejandro to take a extended vacation. Let the stress settle."
I looked at the envelope, then up at her cold, calculating eyes. "You're trying to bribe me to protect a criminal."
"I am trying to protect my daughter from a felony conviction!" Doña Victoria snapped, her polite facade cracking to reveal the fierce predator beneath. "The hospital filed a mandatory report with the police, Elena. Detectives are questioning Paola's friends. If this goes to a public trial, our family name will be dragged through the mud. Alejandro’s position at his father's firm will be ruined. Is your pride really worth destroying everyone’s future?"
"My pride?" I let out a sharp, cynical laugh, my fingers tightening over my belly. "Your daughter locked me in the freezing cold until my hands went numb, Victoria. This isn't about pride. This is about accountability."
"Paola has a psychological condition," Victoria lied smoothly, leaning forward. "She is entering a private clinic tomorrow morning. If you press charges, the state will put her in a penitentiary. She won't survive it. For the sake of the grandchild I am waiting for, drop the statement. Tell the police it was a misunderstanding caused by the sliding door."
Before I could answer, the front door swung open. Alejandro walked in, his suit jacket wrinkled, his face dark with rage as he saw his mother sitting in our living room. He walked straight to the table, snatched the envelope of money, and threw it directly into the trash can near the kitchen.

"Get out of our house, Mother," Alejandro said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly low register. "If you ever come near my wife with a bribe again, I will go to the District Attorney myself and hand over the security footage from our hallway showing Paola manually locking that door."
Victoria stood up, her face draining of color as she realized her wealth couldn't buy her way out of this disaster. She grabbed her purse and marched out, leaving the apartment drowning in a heavy, definitive silence.
