Chapter 5 – The Architect

Two hundred miles away, in the bleak, fluorescent-lit visiting room of the federal penitentiary, Richard Whitmore sat behind a pane of reinforced glass. His once-impeccable hair was graying and unkempt, his tailored suits replaced by a shapeless orange jumpsuit. He looked up as the door opened, his eyes narrowing.

Sitting across from him, picking up the telephone receiver, was Elias Vance.

Vance was a man who existed entirely in the gray areas of the law. He had been Richard’s silent partner, the financial architect who built the complex web of shell companies that laundered their illicit funds. Unlike Richard, Vance had never craved the spotlight. When the empire fell, Vance had slipped quietly into the shadows, entirely unscathed.

"You look terrible, Richard," Vance said, his voice a smooth, cultured purr through the receiver.

"What do you want, Elias?" Richard spat. "Come to gloat?"

"I came for the Zurich ledger," Vance replied, his smile fading. "The feds froze everything they could find. But the Zurich accounts—the ghost funds—those remain untouched. Almost sixty million dollars, Richard. But the access codes were on that encrypted drive. Where is it?"

Richard let out a dry, humorless laugh. "I don't have it."

"I know you don't. The feds didn't find it in your mansion, either. So, who has it?"

Richard leaned closer to the glass. "Before everything went to hell, I knew they were closing in. I had to hide the drive somewhere no one would ever look. Not the banks, not my lawyers."

"Where?" Vance demanded, his patience thinning.

"I slipped it into a package of old family trinkets," Richard smiled bitterly. "I sent it to Lily's mother, right before she died. Disguised it as a peace offering. When the old woman passed, all her belongings went to Lily."

Vance’s eyes widened slightly. "You gave the keys to a sixty-million-dollar empire to your battered ex-wife?"

"She doesn't know she has it," Richard sneered. "She probably threw the junk in a closet. Get the drive, Elias. But in return, I want half transferred to a blind trust for my appeal lawyers."

Vance stood up, straightening his impeccably tailored coat. "I'll get the drive, Richard. But as for your appeal... I think you've spent enough of my money." He hung up the phone, leaving Richard screaming silently behind the glass.
