Chapter 6 – The Ghost in the Heirloom

The following weekend, Lily and Arthur spent Sunday afternoon sorting through the boxes stored in Arthur's attic. The break-in at the Haven Foundation had left them both deeply unsettled. Arthur’s intuition told him that the past was reaching out, and if they were looking for something of Lily's, it had to be hidden among the things she had brought with her when she escaped Richard.
"It’s mostly just clothes and old photo albums," Lily said, wiping dust from her forehead. She opened a heavy cardboard box marked Mom's Things.
Inside were delicate lace doilies, a stack of vintage paperbacks, and a beautifully ornate wooden music box. Lily gently lifted the music box. "I remember when Richard gave this to my mother. It was so out of character for him. He hated her. But he claimed it was an antique he found in Europe, a gesture of goodwill."
Arthur walked over, his eyes fixed on the heavy wooden box. "May I?"
Lily handed it to him. Arthur turned the box over in his hands. It was unusually heavy for its size. He tapped the bottom; the wood sounded hollow. "Do you have a small screwdriver?"
Minutes later, Arthur carefully pried the felt-lined bottom panel away from the music box. Lily gasped. Nestled in a small, hollowed-out cavity was a sleek, black USB drive and a laminated card with a series of alphanumeric sequences.
"What is that?" Lily whispered.
"I think," Arthur said grimly, "this is what they were looking for at your office."
They plugged the drive into Arthur’s laptop. The screen instantly flashed a demand for a decryption key. Arthur typed in the alphanumeric sequence from the laminated card. The drive unlocked, revealing dozens of folders labeled with offshore bank names, account numbers, and routing details.
"Arthur... look at these numbers," Lily said, pointing at a spreadsheet. "There are tens of millions of dollars here. This is Richard's hidden money. The money the authorities couldn't find."
Before Arthur could reply, Lily’s cell phone rang. The caller ID showed an unknown number. She hesitated, then put it on speaker.

"Hello?"
"Lily," a smooth, unfamiliar voice echoed through the speaker. "My name is Elias Vance. I believe you found something that belongs to me in a wooden music box. And I would very much like it back."
