Chapter 8 - The Secret Ally

While Julian was busy consolidating his corporate empire downtown, back at the Vance estate in the affluent hills outside the city, Clara was enjoying a quiet afternoon in the sprawling garden conservatory.

Little Leo was fast asleep in his high-tech stroller, the gentle afternoon breeze rustling the leaves of the exotic ferns surrounding them. Clara sat on a wrought-iron bench, sipping a cup of chamomile tea, her eyes fixed on her tablet screen, where she was reviewing the security logs of the past week.

"You know, for a nanny, you have an awfully suspicious amount of tactical awareness, Clara."

Clara didn't even look up from her screen. A small, knowing smile played on the corners of her lips as a tall figure stepped out from the shadow of the glass archway.

It was Marcus, Julian’s chief of private security—a man who had spent ten years in elite intelligence before taking over the Vance estate protection detail.

"Experience teaches you things, Marcus," Clara replied calmly, taking a sip of her tea. "When you've raised three generations of billionaires, you learn that blood relatives are often much more dangerous than external competitors."

Marcus chuckled quietly, leaning against the marble pillar beside her. He looked down at the sleeping baby with genuine fondness. "Julian still thinks you just got lucky with the smart-tag backup."

"Let him think what he wants," Clara said, locking her tablet screen. "Men like Julian need to believe they are the masters of their own universe. If they knew how many times women like us had to quietly pull the strings behind the scenes to keep their kingdoms from burning down, they'd never sleep a wink."

Marcus nodded in quiet agreement, his expression turning serious. "The local prosecutor called me an hour ago. Victoria’s defense attorney is trying to plea-bargain, claiming she was mentally unstable due to 'high-society pressure'."

Clara’s eyes flashed with a cold, sharp light. She stood up, smoothing the front of her immaculate uniform.

"Tell the prosecutor that if Victoria spends a single day less than twenty-five years behind bars in maximum security, I have a backup folder of financial wire receipts connecting her co-conspirators directly to some very interesting offshore accounts," Clara said smoothly. "She’ll rot in a box, Marcus. I guarantee it."

Marcus grinned, raising his hand in a mock salute. "Consider it handled."
