Chapter 11 - Blood at the Airfield

Rain swept across the abandoned military airfield.

It was the same kind of rain that had fallen the night Della saved Damian.

Silas had chosen the location intentionally.

He wanted Damian surrounded by memory.

Federal agents advised against approaching. Satellite images showed armed men positioned inside two hangars and along the runway.

Damian ignored the advice.

Della did not.

“You cannot walk into another ambush because Silas knows how to provoke you.”

“He has Sofia.”

“And he wants you angry enough to stop thinking.”

Damian stood inside the mobile command vehicle, staring at the airfield map.

Della touched his hand.

“You told me truth matters more than comfort. Here is the truth: Silas has survived because powerful men keep meeting him on his terms.”

“What do you suggest?”

“Change the terms.”

Cordelia had been transported under federal guard, but she agreed to provide access codes in exchange for formal consideration.

She also revealed that Silas maintained a private communications frequency with the guards at the airfield.

Della proposed using it.

At eleven forty-three, Damian’s voice entered every guard’s earpiece.

“Silas Vance has frozen your offshore payments.”

Confusion spread across the intercepted channel.

Damian continued.

“He departed the country twenty minutes ago. The man standing beside the runway is a decoy who intends to leave you behind for federal agents.”

The claim was false, but Silas had built loyalty through money rather than trust.

Doubt moved faster than proof.

Two guards abandoned their positions.

A third demanded confirmation from Silas.

While the perimeter weakened, federal teams entered through the southern fence.

Damian and Della traveled in an armored vehicle behind them.

“You should remain here,” he said.

“I am remaining inside the vehicle.”

“That sounded suspiciously reasonable.”

“I’m saving my unreasonable decisions for later.”

Despite everything, his mouth almost curved.

Gunfire began near the first hangar.

Damian moved toward the door.

Della caught his sleeve.

“Bring her back.”

“I will.”

“And come back with her.”

His eyes held hers.

“I will try.”

“No. Promise.”

“Promises are dangerous.”

“So is loving people.”

Neither of them moved.

The word had arrived before she was ready to examine it.

Love.

Not gratitude.

Not trauma.

Not the strange bond created by one storm seven years earlier.

Something deeper had formed through the nights of danger, the truths he refused to soften, and the way he looked at her child as a life worth protecting rather than an obstacle between them.

Damian touched her cheek.

“I promise.”

Then he entered the rain.

Della watched tactical teams advance between the hangars.

The command radio filled with fragments.

“South gate secure.”

“Two suspects surrendering.”

“Movement near runway three.”

Then silence.

A sudden explosion struck the communications tower.

The armored vehicle rocked.

The driver lost consciousness when his head hit the window.

Della unfastened her belt and checked his pulse.

Alive.

Outside, a black sedan accelerated toward the runway.

Silas sat in the rear seat.

Sofia was beside him.

Damian emerged from the hangar and fired at the tires.

The sedan swerved but continued.

A small private jet waited at the far end of the runway with its engines running.

Della climbed into the driver’s seat.

The federal radio shouted at her to remain still.

She ignored it.

She drove onto the runway.

The armored vehicle was slower than the sedan, but the airfield narrowed near a row of fuel trucks. Della cut across the grass and positioned the vehicle between Silas and the jet.

The sedan struck the side panel.

Metal folded.

Della’s body slammed against the belt.

Pain tightened across her abdomen.

She gasped.

The baby moved.

Still alive.

Silas exited the damaged car holding Sofia by the neck.

Damian approached from the opposite side.

“Drop the gun,” Silas shouted.

Damian lowered his weapon.

Silas looked toward Della inside the armored vehicle.

“You were always the complication.”

Della opened the door carefully.

“Let Sofia go.”

“Women like you mistake survival for power.”

“No,” she said. “Men like you mistake fear for loyalty.”

Silas’s own guards emerged behind him.

One dropped his weapon.

Then another.

They had heard the false transmission.

They no longer knew whether Silas could pay them.

Silas looked around.

His empire was dissolving not because someone had become stronger, but because everyone had finally realized he stood alone.

Sofia drove her heel into his foot and twisted away.

Damian lunged.

Silas fired.

The bullet struck Damian below the ribs.

Della screamed.

Damian fell to one knee.

Federal agents opened fire.

Silas dropped.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Della ran.

She reached Damian as he collapsed onto the rain-soaked runway.

Blood spread beneath his hand.

“No,” she said. “No, you promised.”

His face had gone pale.

“I remember.”

She pressed both hands against the wound.

“You are not allowed to die after making me wait seven years to meet you properly.”

A faint smile touched his mouth.

“That would be rude.”

“Stay with me.”

His eyes moved toward her belly.

“The baby?”

“She’s safe.”

“Good.”

His hand covered hers.

“You saved me twice.”

Sirens approached.

Della leaned close, shielding his face from the rain.

“Then stop making me do it.”

His eyes closed.

The medical team pulled her back.

As they lifted Damian onto the stretcher, pain seized Della’s abdomen again.

This time it did not fade.

Warm blood ran down the inside of her leg.

Dr. Navarro saw it.

“Get another stretcher!”

Della looked from Damian’s motionless body to the blood beneath her dress.

At twenty-one weeks pregnant, her baby had no guarantee of survival.

Two emergency teams raced across the runway.
