Chapter 12 - Between Two Heartbeats

The hospital placed Damian in one operating room and Della in another.

A bullet had damaged Damian’s liver and severed an artery.

The collision at the airfield had caused Della’s cervix to begin opening far too early.

Dr. Navarro stood beside her bed while medication entered the IV.

“We are trying to stop the labor.”

“Will she survive?”

“We are going to do everything possible.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It is the only honest one.”

Della turned her face toward the ceiling.

She thought of the empty nursery Cordelia had prepared.

She thought of Caleb painting yellow stars across the wall of their apartment.

She thought of Damian lying in the rain.

“Is he alive?”

“He is still in surgery.”

Sofia entered wearing hospital scrubs borrowed from a nurse. A bruise circled her neck, but she remained steady.

“I’ll stay with you.”

“You should wait for your brother.”

“I have waited nine years for my brother. He would want me here.”

Della closed her eyes as another contraction tightened.

Hours passed through fragments.

Cold cloth against her forehead.

Dr. Navarro’s voice.

The rapid heartbeat of her daughter on the monitor.

Sofia holding her hand.

Shortly before dawn, the contractions began to weaken.

Dr. Navarro examined her again.

“The medication is working.”

Della barely allowed herself to breathe.

“The baby?”

“Heart rate remains strong. You will need strict bed rest and continuous monitoring.”

“And Damian?”

Sofia looked toward the door.

A surgeon entered.

“He survived the operation.”

The room blurred with tears.

“He lost a significant amount of blood, but the bullet was removed. The next twenty-four hours remain critical.”

Della touched her belly.

Two heartbeats.

Both still present.

Both fighting.

Three days later, Damian opened his eyes.

Della could not visit because she remained confined to the maternity floor. Instead, Sofia carried a phone into his room.

His face appeared pale and exhausted on the screen.

“You look terrible,” Della said.

“You are a cruel woman.”

“You were shot.”

“I noticed.”

She smiled, then began crying.

Damian’s expression softened.

“Hey.”

“I thought both of you were gone.”

“We are difficult to remove.”

“The baby takes after me.”

“Obviously.”

He lifted one hand toward the camera.

Della placed her palm against the screen.

It was not touch, but for the moment it was enough.

Federal prosecutors charged Silas with racketeering, conspiracy, trafficking, attempted murder, bribery, and multiple counts connected to stolen medical identities.

He survived his wounds.

Cordelia began negotiating a cooperation agreement.

Della did not care how many years Cordelia received as long as every missing child was found and every family learned the truth.

But Damian faced his own investigation.

Two federal agents visited Della’s room one week after the airfield.

Agent Lena Brooks placed a recorder on the table.

“Mr. Vale cooperated with the task force, but his cooperation does not erase his past.”

Della looked at her.

“What are you asking me?”

“Whether he ever admitted specific crimes.”

“He told me he had hurt people.”

“Did he provide names?”

“No.”

“Locations?”

“No.”

“Did you witness him threaten anyone?”

“I witnessed him save me.”

Agent Brooks remained professional.

“That is not the same as innocence.”

“I know.”

Della hated the answer, but she meant it.

Damian had never claimed to be innocent.

Love could not require her to ignore the lives damaged before she knew him.

“What will happen?” she asked.

“That depends on how much information he provides and whether he accepts responsibility.”

After the agents left, Della stared through the hospital window.

She had imagined happiness as an ending where danger disappeared and good people received rewards.

Real life was more complicated.

Damian could save her and still owe debts to the past.

He could love her and still be held accountable.

The next morning, he was brought to her room in a wheelchair, accompanied by federal guards.

Della’s chest tightened.

“You’re under arrest.”

“Protective custody for now.”

He looked thinner, but his eyes were clear.

“I made an agreement.”

“What kind?”

“I will testify against the remaining Vance network and provide records of my own operations.”

“What happens to you?”

“Possibly prison.”

The word struck her.

“How long?”

“My attorneys cannot predict it.”

“You promised to come back.”

“I came back.”

“Don’t use technicalities.”

He moved the wheelchair closer.

“I spent years believing accountability was something weak men demanded when they lacked the power to take revenge. You showed me otherwise.”

Della fought tears.

“I didn’t save you so you could disappear into a cell.”

“No. You saved me so I could decide what kind of man survived.”

He placed a small wooden object on her blanket.

The brass dancer from Caleb’s music box.

Owen had hidden a memory card beneath its base.

“It contains Caleb’s final message,” Damian said.

Della inserted the card into her phone.

Caleb appeared on-screen inside their apartment.

He looked tired but peaceful.

“Della, there is something I need you to know. Whatever happens, do not build your future around my death. I loved you too much to become the reason you stop living.”

She covered her mouth.

Caleb continued.

“Our child deserves stories about courage, not fear. And you deserve someone who sees your strength before your suffering.”

The video ended.

Della looked at Damian.

He lowered his gaze.

“I am not asking you to wait for me.”

“Good.”

Surprise crossed his face.

She reached for his hand.

“Because I make my own decisions.”

A knock sounded at the door.

Dr. Navarro entered carrying new test results.

Her expression was serious.

“The baby is stable, but we found something during the latest scan.”

Della’s grip tightened around Damian’s hand.

“What?”

“There is a problem with the placenta. Continuing the pregnancy may become dangerous for both of you.”
