Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Storm

The victory in the family court was only the first domino to fall. Two days after Judge Sterling ripped custody away from Margaret and Daniel, the financial bomb we had planted finally detonated across the city.

It was a Friday morning, the day of the annual Storm Enterprises Charity Gala. The local news channels were running glowing live broadcasts from the grand ballroom of the Sterling Grand Hotel, where society’s elite had gathered in tuxedos and evening gowns to applaud Margaret Storm as she accepted her annual humanitarian award.

I sat on my living room couch, holding Leo in one arm while sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea, watching the live stream on my laptop.

On the screen, Margaret stood at the center stage, wearing a stunning midnight-blue velvet gown sparkling with diamonds, holding a heavy crystal trophy, smiling radiantly as the ballroom erupted in thunderous applause.

“Thank you, thank you so much,” Margaret spoke into the podium microphone, her voice carrying that trademark aristocratic warmth that had fooled investors and politicians for decades. “At Storm Enterprises, we believe that true wealth is measured not by what we accumulate, but by what we give back to our community...”

Suddenly, the side doors of the grand ballroom flew open.

A dozen federal agents in dark suits, led by two senior U.S. Marshals, marched in single file down the center aisle, bypassing the startled security guards who didn't dare lay a finger on federal law enforcement.

The applause stuttered, then died completely. A heavy, suffocating silence descended over the ballroom as the camera swung around to capture the unfolding chaos.

Margaret stopped mid-sentence, blinking in confusion as the lead marshal stepped right up to the base of the stage, pulled a folded parchment from his jacket pocket, and unrolled it.

“Margaret Storm, Daniel Storm, and Arthur Sterling,” the marshal’s deep voice boomed through the ballroom sound system, echoing sharply. “You are under federal arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

Chaos erupted. Screams echoed through the ballroom, flashbulbs blinded the camera lenses, and reporters scrambled forward, thrusting microphones toward the stage. Margaret’s face drained of every drop of color; she dropped the crystal trophy, shattering it into a thousand sparkling pieces on the stage floor, before two female agents gently but firmly cuffed her wrists behind her back.

As the live broadcast showed Margaret being escorted down the center aisle in handcuffs, her head bowed in utter humiliation, my phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It was a text from Marcus Vance.

Marcus Vance: The federal warrants have frozen all Storm family assets, accounts, and trusts. They are completely insolvent. The empire is officially crumbling. How does it feel to watch an empire fall, Sarah?

I looked down at Leo, who was staring up at the glowing laptop screen with wide, innocent eyes, blowing tiny milk bubbles.

I smiled, pulling him a little closer to my chest.

“It feels like justice, baby,” I whispered. “Just the beginning of justice.”
