Chapter 4 - The 4:00 AM Siege

At 3:52 AM, the gale off Lake Michigan died down to a freezing, eerie drizzle that coated the asphalt of Elm Street in a thin sheet of black ice.

Inside my estate, every light had been extinguished.

From the outside, the two-story limestone mansion looked dark, peaceful, and completely unprotected—an old, sleeping house holding a defenseless widow and her broken child.

Behind the lace curtains of the second-floor library, I stood beside Special Agent Marcus Cole, looking through military-grade thermal-imaging binoculars.

A mile down the winding, wooded avenue, three heavy vehicles approached with their headlamps turned completely black, running only on faint infrared tactical markers.

They were matte-black Cadillac Escalades, reinforced with steel grilles, heavy tinted windows, and pneumatic run-flat tires.

Inside the vehicles, the thermal imaging revealed fourteen glowing orange heat signatures—men carrying short-barreled automatic weapons, Kevlar vests, and mechanical breaching rams.

"They're moving in a standard box-formation, Judge," Cole whispered into his tactical headset. "Dominic is in the lead vehicle. He brought his private muscle from the Gary industrial docks."

"Are the gates prepped?" I asked softly.

"The gate hydraulics have been set to remote override," Cole replied. "The moment their rear bumper clears the brick pillars, the steel bars drop."

Down on the driveway, the lead Escalade bumped over the stone apron.

The heavy iron security gates—which had been left deliberately unlatched—swung inward with a soft, inviting creak.

The three black SUVs glided smoothly up the circular drive, tires crunching over the wet gravel, coming to a coordinated stop in a semi-circle directly in front of my front steps.

The vehicle doors clicked open in unison.

Ten men dressed in sterile black tactical jumpsuits, balaclavas concealing their faces, stepped onto the gravel, their suppressed carbines held at the low-ready.

Stepping out of the rear passenger seat of the center Escalade, wearing a bespoke four-thousand-dollar charcoal cashmere overcoat, his leather gloves tight around a titanium crowbar, was Dominic Ward.

At thirty-four, Dominic looked like the golden prince of Chicago real estate: tall, athletic, with styled dark hair, sharp cheekbones, and that terrifying, unhinged arrogance of a predator who had never faced a consequence in his life.

"Check the perimeter!" Dominic barked in a harsh, arrogant whisper to his team leader. "Find Miller’s cruiser! The idiot probably got his car stuck in the ravine!"

He walked up the first two limestone steps of my porch, raising his crowbar:

"Move on the front doors! Kick them in! Get the girl! If the mother screams, tape her mouth, tie her to the bedposts, and burn her phone! We have a private jet spooling up at Gary Airport for Mexico City in ninety minutes!"

The lead mercenary stepped onto the top landing, raising a heavy sledgehammer—

PNEUMATIC HISS.

From the cedar hedges flanking both sides of the driveway, four concealed hydraulic steel barrier spikes shot eighteen inches out of the ground with concussive, explosive force:

THUNK!

The heavy steel bars pierced straight through the undercarriages and engine blocks of all three Escalades, severing their transmissions in a spray of pressurized oil.

BOOM!

Two high-output flashbang stun canisters detonated from the eaves of the roof directly above Dominic’s head in a blinding, concussive flash:

BANG! BANG!

A blinding, two-million-candlepower white flare and a 160-decibel shockwave tore through the courtyard.

Dominic shrieked in disoriented agony, dropping his titanium crowbar, clawing at his blinded eyes, his ears bleeding from the acoustic shockwave:

"WHAT IS THAT?! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!"

The night sky directly overhead was ripped apart by the deafening, earth-shaking roar of twin turboshaft engines.

WHOP-WHOP-WHOP-WHOP!

Two Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk tactical helicopters bearing the bold golden lettering FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION plummeted out of the low clouds, hovering fifty feet above the lawn, their high-intensity searchlights bathing the entire estate in a blinding, daytime brilliance.

WHEEE-WHEEE-WHEEE!

From the perimeter woods, forty heavily armed operators from the FBI Hostage Rescue Team swarmed the driveway, their suppressed assault rifles locked dead-center on Dominic’s mercenaries:

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND! ON THE GROUND RIGHT NOW!"

The ten mercenaries didn't fire a single round.

They were seasoned contract soldiers; they knew the difference between a corrupt local SWAT team and the apex tactical hammer of the federal government.

They dropped their automatic weapons onto the gravel in frantic, trembling surrender, throwing themselves flat on their stomachs with their hands interlocked behind their heads.

Dominic Ward stood alone on the limestone steps.

He was trembling violently, his expensive cashmere coat covered in gravel dust, his jaw slack as he stared into the blinding searchlights of the hovering Black Hawk.

The front oak doors of the mansion pushed open with a slow, majestic creak.

Stepping onto the top landing, illuminated by the federal spotlights, radiating the untouchable majesty of an absolute sovereign judge, was me.

I wore my formal black judicial robes, the heavy silk billowing gently in the downdraft of the helicopter rotors.

Around my neck hung the gold seal of the United States District Court.

Dominic blinked through the blinding glare, his throat clicking dryly as his bloodshot eyes locked onto the black robes:

"Victoria...?" Dominic croaked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic squeak.

"What... what is this costume?! What did you do?!"

I walked slowly down the limestone steps, stopping three feet above where he stood shivering in the dirt.

"This is not a costume, Dominic," I whispered.

May you like

My voice carried clearly over the thumping of the helicopter blades, dropping like an iron coffin lid onto his soul:

"This is your trial."
